More about Sandman Suites Davie - Vancouver Downtown

Sandman Davie Village, Vancouver BC First Class

by A TripAdvisor Member

We stayed in the Sandman in Davie Village for eight days and we found the accommodation was just first class. It was wonderful having all the facilities ie., dishwasher, washing machine, stove and fridge freezer. The staff were always very friendly and helpful. The location is perfect for downtown you can walk every where and there are lots of restaurants to choose from. Davie Street is very lively. We will definately stay there again and would higly recommend it to our friends.

Davie Street

by Carmanah

Davie Street's in the heart of downtown Vancouver within close walking proximity to a lot of the downtown attractions.

Davie Street itself isn't really a shopping "district" - it's more like a main road in the heart of the residential "West End" neighbourhood that just happens to be commercial. Davie Street itself has many casual restaurants, cafes, regular-every-day grocery/hardware/drug stores, a few pubs, and a few boutiques... but they tend to cater more to locals who frequent them day to day. It's unlike Robson Street a few blocks up, which is a major retail shopping area in which tourists and locals come to go shopping for shoes and new clothes.

However, Davie's cool in that way because it's not flashy or overly populated with crowds - it has a very local vibe going on. It's also the home of Vancouver's gay community, and that much will be evident if you stroll Davie between Burrard and Denman.

If you walk all the way to the western end of Davie, to where it intersects with Denman Street, you'll be at English Bay. Half of Vancouver's attraction is its scenery, and its close proximity to the beach/mountains. English Bay is a cool area to soak up that scenery... assuming it's not pouring rain (as the view of the mountains will be blocked). Even if it is pouring, take an umbrella, and go for a stroll. Stanley Park (the most famous Vancouver "attraction") is just a short stroll up the sea wall from English Bay - and I'd highly recommend a walk around the park if you can. It'll take a good hour to walk the entire perimiter of the park, but certainly worth it if you want to get a feel for the city.

There are a few hotels on Davie (the Sandman Suites, the Best Western Sands), and the Hostelling International Vancouver - Downtown hostel is one block south. All in all, Davie's an excellent area to get a local's perspective of Vancouver's West End living.

Great location, great value!

We enjoyed staying at the Sandman Suites for 4 nights from Aug 20-23, 2005. We got a great price ($149 Cdn), which is an excellent deal for high season in downtown Vancouver (other hotels I looked at were in the $200-$300 price range for 3 1/2 star to 5 stars). This hotel has a kitchen, including fridge, and washer/dryer combo.

This location is perfect for visiting downtown Vancouver, we were able to walk EVERYWHERE from this location....including Yaletown, Robson Street, Canada Place, ferry to go to Granville Island. For a real treat, walk to Yaletown, rent some bikes and cycle along the seawall to Stanley Park...check out all the cool people and wonderful beaches along the way. You can even catch the ferry to Kits Beach from just a few blocks near the hotel. Even our room with "no view" had a pretty decent view of Davies Street. There are many restaurants and shops open at all hours on Davies. This hotel is located in the heart of Vancouver's gay community. Although all are welcome, if you are easily bothered by this, don't stay here. Better yet, don't go to Vancouver. It is a beautiful city with a very open minded.

The hotel has a nice lobby, and generally friendly staff. The rooms are quite large (living room, bedroom, and kitcken) and have air conditioning. We found the bed VERY hard, so we just pulled out the sofa bed and found that to be comfortable. The room wasn't perfectly clean (ie. we did find the occasional stray hair on our sheets), but then again I've found this is $300 per night hotels.

A comment about parking...when you check in you are told to 'valet park' since it's the same price, but we said "no, thanks - prefer to park ourselves" and they were fine with that and told us where to park.

Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel for a comfortable stay and fun time in Vancouver. Our only suggestion is that you will need more than 4 days to fully appreciate Vancouver!

Disappointed

by A TripAdvisor Member

Stayed at the Sandman - good location, modern suites but let down by front desk service management being very poor.

Problem with the toilet notified on arrival took two days to sort out - after repeated requests - by transferring us to another room. That room was not serviced for two days requiring repeated calls to the front desk. Also if you do stay there get a room 6th floor or above.

excellent hotel

by A TripAdvisor Member

Met a family here for family reunion and it was wonderful. I liked the secure way the elevators work....must have room key to use them. Free internet access available.... never had to wait to use computers. Friendly helpful staff.

There was a problem with valet parking and hotel readily assumed full responsibility when vehicle was damaged.

Moxie's, grill next door, had good food, but was slow service.

Good Value

We stayed at the Sandman in September 7th, for 3 nights. Our total bill was $443US which landed it the $150 per night including taxes.
The room was small but nice, the area reminds me of Melrose ave for those of you from Los Angeles. Lot's of food places, clothing stores, coffee shops, smoke shops, internet cafes, and colorful crowds. Davie street is the main "drag" of the gay community, so make sure your comfortable with the culture.
One complaint was the housekeeping. We found items that were left from a prior guest in the bedside table. And the most irritating of all, they did not replenish our coffee supplies each day. Hmm you would think.. these guests brewed ther coffee and used all of the cream and sugar, maybe we should give them more coffee, but no.. they just wahsed our glasses and straightened the supplies. My boyfriend had to get dressed to go down for coffee. By instinct the next day we asked for an extra bag, and sure enough housekeeping forgot again to fill our coffee. This seems like a little thing, but was really annoying. The other issue was that the room keys de magnetized very easliy. not fun when rolling up late at night only to get to your room and find the key wont let you in! Overall good value considering prices at nearby hotels.

bargain hotel in Vancouver

by A TripAdvisor Member

We stayed here for 8 nights and in general couldn't say a bad word about it.

The location is interesting, in the Gay part of the city and does have some sex shops and plenty of gay bars surrounding it. However whilst you need to be a bit broad minded, the area is fine with 24 hr supermarket and drug stores nearby and some excellent restaurants. It's a 20-30 minute walk downtown, 10 minutes to the ferries to Granville island

We had a suite, with a huge comfortable bed, the bed was so big it made the bedroom look small. The living room/kitchenette had everything we needed as did the bathroom. The washer/dryer is a huge advantage, especially if you are in the midst of a trip or want not to fact into a pile of washing when you get home. Bear in mind however that a load takes 5 hrs or so to complete and you should leave the sliding door in front of it open, we didn't and the machine vibrated into the door and jammed it

Only bad point about the hotel is the elevators, there simply aren't enough.Despite the fact that you may need to wait a couple of minutes, it's worth staying as high as you can (we were on the 19th floor) for the views. Happily stay here again and for the price it's an absolute bargain

Sandman is a good value

by A TripAdvisor Member

This is a very convenient hotel on a very lively and urban street. We were there for 5 days travelling with 2 little kids. The negatives are:
- urban environment there are pan handlers
- If you have a car, the entrance is in the alley
- It is in a gay district if you are not familiar with culture
- Living room is tiny

Positives are:
- Good shower
- comfy bed, flat pillows but many
- good central location Stanley Park, Cruise terminal and Chinatown all easy drives
- Starbucks and numerous other coffe shops outside
- bakery next door very good fresh bread and many fruitstands nearby
- room has fridge, microwave and stove
- walkable to Robson Street
- many little local restaurants
- good views we had room on 16th floor
- there is a 24 hour grocery and drug store nearby
- staff was friendly but not very knowlegable about area outside downtown
- free computer internet in lobby but only 2 terminals
- Price only $125 night

Would stay again for that price and convenient location

loved the Sandman

by TripAdvisor Member SanDiegoBrian

The Sandman has a wonderful lobby, very friendly staff (full of information and quick to respond to room requests) and a good location. Our room was on the 19th floor and faced west, towards the bay/ocean. What a great view! Perfect for getting a cup of coffee and just watching the float planes, the boats, or the people on the street mill about.

The room itself was recently remodeled and very nice. The seperate bedroom was essential for a naping 2 year old and pregnant wife, as it allowed me to watch t.v. in the other room. It also has a kitchen. There are markets at street level in addition to Starbucks and other coffee shops.

It is a short drive to Stanley Park (plenty of parking and $6 for the whole day) and everywhere eles. As far as the neighborhood, I didn't get the gay vibe everyone else spoke about. In fact, we never saw a couple holding hands nor flamboyant dressers. I asked my wife what she thought the vibe of the area was and she said multi-cultural (she hadn't read previous reviews).

I rated it excellent because we would stay there again; not to mean 5 star rating.

Re: sandman suites on davie...?

by YVRDave

It is a fine hotel. The India Bistro across the street is great. You may want to look at Chambar for the beer http://www.chambar.com/

Re: sandman suites on davie...?

by yvr

Nice hotel, but a heads up, you will be staying in the middle of the "gay village"

Re: sandman suites on davie...?

by YVRDave

The Sandman Suites on Davie is actually a really cool hotel, but it looks plain from the outside. See if you can score a room facing west towards English Bay - the view is killer!

About it being in the gay neighbourhood. True, but it's not exclusively such. Lots of cafes and shops and grocery stores and the like.

For Belgian draft beer: Stella's on Commercial Drive (outside of downtown) or Chambar. Chambar, however, is a high end lounge. other than that, Belgian beer isn't as common as I'd like it to be! :D

Re: sandman suites on davie...?

by Carmanah

Here's the link for Stella's, if you do make it out to Commercial Drive: http://stellasbeer.com/

Other than that, I'd maybe introduce yourself to one of the many different types of Quebec Unibroue beer, as you'll far more likely come in contact with that around town: www.unibroue.com

Re: sandman suites on davie...?

by YVRDave

Wow, I keep forgetting Stellas but, the beer prices would be about the same as Chambar and it is on Skytrain

Re: sandman suites on davie...?

by skokomish

Thanks for the info ill have a look at stellas...but correct me if im wrong, last time i was in yvr i stayed at the rosedale on robson and there was a pub up the road called Lennox ? If i remember...had a few.. they had some decent belgian beers there, bottle and draft, is it still the same ?

Warren

Re: sandman suites on davie...?

by YVRDave

The Lennox at Granville and Robson sells more draught beer than any other pub in Vancouver. I was shocked to learn this. Yes it is a great pub.

Re: sandman suites on davie...?

by Carmanah

Never been to the Lennox. I always end up at the Irish Heather. :P
