lucky mom

by luckymom

I am looking at Hotel/Motel in vancouver. We will be flying in to Vancouver (was thinking about Seattle but will do that later) We are going to be leaving on a cruise. Then coming back and spending a fews days in Vancouver. Do not want to rent a car. I've checked into a couple of places in N. Vancouver but my question there what is the public transportation like. Also transportation to and from Airport and to and from cruise line. Have also checked on airport stays. If you have a suggestion I am open. Will be traveling 9/10/10 for one night then coming back 9/28/10 for 4 nights.

If you are taking a cruise from Vancouver, look into staying at the Pan Pacific Hotel, it is located right by the cruise terminal. Another hotel choice that is close to the cruise termianl is the Waterfront Hotel.
It would also be easy to reach from the airport by public transit. At the airport, you can take the Skytrain to Waterfront station which is right by the Pan Pacific.
If you wanted to stay in North Vancouver, you could take skytrain from the airport to Waterfront station and then transfer to the Seabus, which ferries passengers from Vancouver across to North Vancouver.

If you select North Vancouver as your hotel area, you will find public bus service is good, they run from early morning to very late at night. Buses in North Vancouver connect with the Seabus which will take you across the water in less than 15 minutes to downtown Vancouver. Also buses will take you across the Lions Gate Bridge into downtown Vancouver, if you decide on North Van, take the Seabus and the bus across the Lions Gate Bridge as they both offer great views of Vancouver and the surrounding area. www.translink.ca is the web site for public transportation in Vancouver or if you wish, let me know what you need to know and I can get that info for you.

Vancouver Public Library

by tvor

Downtown Vancouver is a forest of high skyscrapers but some of them are very interesting. A not so high new building is the public library, it's round and sort of shaped like a spiral or an @ sign almost. There is an office tower to the side of it, also curved to reflect the library. Between the two buildings is a glass roofed atrium lined with shops.

a must visit is Stanley Park - what a sight for sore eyes . With more than 400 hectares of lawn , foerst and waterfront , Vancouver's versatile urban park can be a place for sweet serenity . I enjoyed just watching people walk through this park , whether you were with your sweetheart , family members or simply just relaxing on the grass .

High Speed Wireless Connectivity (WiFi)

by rmdw

Vancouver is blessed to have numerous wireless "hotspots" throughout the city. They've been installed by a great company with a strange name: FatPort.

To connect all you need is WiFi card (also known as 802.11b). These can generally be found for much less than $75 at stores such as London Drugs and Future Shop. My favourite wireless location in Vancouver is also my favourite coffee shop: Seattle's Best Coffee at 11th & Granville.

The best location is by the window in the NW corner, looking out at the stream of pedestrians along Granville Street. Wonderful memories!

Currency Exchange

by rmdw

Most non-Canadians coming to Vancouver will need to convert their money into Canadian Dollars. There are generally 3 ways to do this:

1. Go to a bank and give them non-Canadian money (most often US dollars).

2. Go to an ATM and withdraw funds, which will be in Canadian currency.

3. Go to a currency exchange retailer.

Please do compare rates with each, but I've found that the best rates can be found at one of the "Vancouver Bullion & Currency Exchange" outlets. They have 4 locations:
- Downtown Vancouver
- South Granville (just south of downtown)
- Richmond
- Burnaby

The savings you get will generally only be a few dollars for every $100 but if you're exchanging a lot of money then it is worth it to get the very best rate!
