Seafood Restaurant Recommendations

by lisha74

Hello,

I will be traveling to Vancouver next month for the Olympics, and am looking for restaurant recommendations for while I'm there. Particularly seafood restaurants. Casual places, nothing too fancy or pricey. Any recommendations offered would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Most places are here. Sandbar and Carderos are going to be in the top party zones in town.
Provence will be in THE party zone.
My favorite fish and chip shop in the downtown area is on the walkway by the docks in Kitsilano. I just don't know the name. I'll look for it.

You can try the Cannery , not far from downtown. http://www.canneryseafood.com/

all good suggestions the Cannery is $$$ but worth it, also Salmon house on the hill $$$$ but an incredible view!!
Try Bridges at Granville island or just have fish and chips from the little fish place right at granville island!1
If you really want a tradition of Vancouver-- the Only on Hastings.. bad area little dive but the best fish and chips in Vancouver!!

- which area / neighbourhood of vancouver will you be lodging in / at ? there may be numerous excellent options reasonably close ie: within walking distance. thanks.

We're actually staying on Vancouver Island and taking the ferry in. Lodging was too scarce and pricey due to the Olympics. But we'll have plenty of time to explore, so we're open to any suggestions!

Thanks for those that have already replied, many of these looks great. We still have a couple of weeks before our trip, so if there are any that haven't been mentioned, please keep them coming :o)

if you are staying in nanaimo. checkout nauticals. very good. cheap. and close to the ferry .

I would second the Cannery. It's worth the cab ride out there and I think its the best sea food in town. All the restaurants here serve sea food but if you're travelling in from the Middle of the Island then the Boathouse at Horseshoe Bay is pretty good and its right by the ferry terminal. Of course it would be great if you ould come to Steveston but I think it will be too much out of your way.

The Cannery is closing after the Olympics! The port wouldn't renew its lease and they couldn't find another suitable location. I am so sad. I loved the location and the lobster oil.

Travel Tips for Vancouver

Chinatown architecture

by meteorologist1

Vancouver's historic Chinatown has preserved some unique, old buildings built back in the late 1800's and early 1900's when Chinatown was founded. A walking tour in Chinatown to see these buildings was excellent. As an example, in this photo, you can see an old building (green one) which was built in 1909. The ground level was once a Chinese hospital but the building belongs to the Chinese Benevolent Association which was established in 1895.

Other interesting buildings to see include the Chin Wing Chun Society building, Kuomintang Building, and the Sam Kee Building which claims to be the world's narrowest building at only 6 feet in depth.

I love the gaslight district:...

by JNehal

I love the gaslight district: by day a funky, artsy and touristy shopping area. By night, very proximate to a heavy area frequented heroin addicts and prostitures. Also, there are streets where prostitution is generally permitted in Vancouver - I am not advocating or decrying this practive but you will see this if you walk about. If you like to 'explore' the grittier side of a city in a relatively safe way, check out the gaslight district at night. I love eating in Vancouver, but my favorite memory is a co-worker of mine (we visit Vancouver every two years for a conference) introduced me to duck-pin or nine-pin bowling. Small pins, a ball about like a shotput in size (lighter, tho)and three throws a frame. It was fun.

Stanley Park by Shuttle Bus

by eho

There is a shuttle bus that goes around the park during the summer time. If you take public transit to the park, make sure you keep your transfer to use on the shuttle bus; otherwise, it costs $2. The shuttle has numerous stops close to all attractions and view points in the park. You can hop on and off any time you like.

This picture was taken on the Ravine trail shortly after I got off the Ravine trail shuttle stop. You can see bikers and pedestrians walking on the sea wall, with North Vancouver in the background.

The cloudy sky

by Amareyui

Even on those perfect sunny days, the sky in Vancouver is hardly all clear. Clouds, in the most unusual forms and shapes, dominate the sight of above. Light reflection through the clouds, especially during the long summer night, is a scene to marvel. The sky looks ever so mysterious, and every minute different sight has progressed for the causal ones who care to look up.

Grouse Mountain - summer

by chris_i79

Grouse Mountain is a beautiful lookout on the North side of Vancouver. During the summer months mountain biking takes over from skiing as the mountains favorite attraction. There is also a lumberjack and bird show to watch and a small zoo with Grizley bears and wolves. If you don't feel like riding your bike you can trek the many different trails.
