Great location and great value!

If you're looking for a hotel that is comfortable, reputable, and centrally located without breaking the bank, the Best Western Carlton Plaza is the place for you. Realistically, most hotels gouge visitors during the high season. But if you're looking to save some money, head away from the hotels that border the inner harbour. The Carlton Plaza is located right in the heart of downtown. It's about a 10 minute walk to the inner harbour. But during that walk, you can enjoy the shops along Government Street. It's also a hop, skip and a jump to Chinatown and the Bay Shopping Centre and extremely accessible to the #17 highway to the Ferries and #1 highway to head up island. There are basic amenties on site including a fitness centre and a restaurant but the staff are very friendly! They also offer free passes to the YMCA downtown swimming pool if you really want to go swimming! If you're looking for value - this is the place to be! Furthermore, all whale watching companies and tour bus operators pick up guests for free from the hotel if you don't feel like walking!

Unique Quality: The greatest unique quality of this hotel is its location. It is the only hotel in the heart of downtown Victoria. It is the closest accomodation 3.5 star accomodation to Chinatown, the Bay Centre, and the Save on Foods Centre (if you're in town for a concert). It is also a heritage building built in the early 1900's. But don't let that worry you. All the rooms were recently renovated and feature complimentary bottles of water and complimentary wireless internet. They even have bikes which they loan to guests for two hours at a time on a complimentary basis! They have 4 bikes so that the whole family can go for a bike ride together! Helmets and bike locks are included! Also, if you're travelling with the family, they offer suites with kitchenettes and a pull-out sofa which is only an extra $20 per night. The only downside is that being right downtown, there is the possibility of being subjected to noise.

Well I am at odds with this one...The staff was amazing,so helpful from the valet to the front desk who pulled up the website for the local movie theatres. The location is good depending on what you are looking for,we were able to walk to the waterfront and my daughters favorite store (LULULEMON) and hubby and son were able to walk to the Save-on-foods memorial center for the monster truck show. The room was clean and quite large.

Now for the downside,we booked directly with Best Western using points for our stay like we always do,this was our first time with this location though I personally don`t like using valet and I guess that might explain my surprise that it costs $9 a day for the service, there was no mention of this when I bokked so I would have liked a little heads up. I booked 2 queens,I sleep on a king at home but I do not think it was 2 queens more like 2 dbls! The bathroom is so small it can be challenging to close the door once you are in there. The location can be a plus or a minus on the way home from the memorial center my son and hubby witnessed a mugging and fight, druggies do hang out at the 7-11 accross the street and there is an uneasy feeling that far up from the waterfront.

Again the property was clean and the staff were the friendliest and most helpful I think I have ever met. But I think next time I will just pony up the cash and stay at either the Marriott or my favorite the Coast Victoria Harbourside. The location for the coast is not as good for walking to the aterfront but the hotel itself is waterfront and it is a nice walk, they offer a complimentry shuttle to wherever it is you want to go and there is no cahrge for parking.Hopefully someone will get something from my review.

Decent Hotel for Bargin Price

by TripAdvisor Member thekld

I was travelling to Victoria with a buddy to visit some friends, so I decided to Hotwire a room and ended up at the Best Western Carlton Plaza. All in all I felt the place was decent and considering what I paid per night ($59 USD) I guess it could have been a lot worse. Here are my thoughts:

POSITIVES:

- Location: This place has a great location within walking distance of most parts of downtown and has many, many shops and restaurants within two blocks. It was great to be able to stumble back to the hotel from the great downtown bars.

- Price: As I said before, I paid $59.00 on hotwire. It was an amazing deal. Recently I saw the same room for $170. I would never pay $170/night for this hotel.

NEUTRALS:

- Room: It was small and the decor was dated. The bathroom had creepy flouresent lighting and seemed as if it hadn't been remodeled since the early 80s. The shower had average pressure and maintained hot water long enough to take a decent length shower. My room had a two doubles, a small desk, a chair and in in-window air conditioner. The TV was old, small and the remote barely worked. However, the room was clean.

- The service was simply average. The person at check-in was not particularly friendly, but wasn't rude . . .just doing her job un-enthausiastically.

NEGATIVES:

- Bed: The beds were small and short. I'm 6' 4'' and I could not fit on the beds.

- Lobby: Nothing here. No character, no place to hang out only a couple places to sit. The breakfast placed attached to the hotel was decent.

SUMMARY:

In light of the foregoing, I would stay there again if I could find it for under $99.

Warm friendly service, central location!

by TripAdvisor Member dforce

I truly enjoyed my stay at the Best Western Carlton Plaza in Victoria, BC. Right from check-in all the way to check-out, the staff were extremely accomodating and very friendly at all times. They even called me in my room to make sure that I was enjoying my stay!

The hotel offers a valet parking service which is very convenient since parking is limited downtown and can be a costly nightmare if you had to park yourself!

The rooms are clean and up to date. The hotel offers complimentary wireless internet and free bottles of water which I thought were a nice touch and added bonus. You can always count on value when you stay at a Best Western!

The best part is the location. Although staying right in the heart of the city can sometimes subject one to the "usual downtown noises," the convenience and central location of the hotel more than compensate. While the hotel is not situation on the harbour, it is a very leisurely 10 minute walk down Government street to the inner harbour. It's only a couple of blocks to Chinatown or the Bay Centre which is the main shopping centre downtown. Also, if you book a bus tour or a whale watching trip, the tour company will even come and pick you up!

Don't be afraid to ask the Front Desk for directions or anything you may need as they are very friendly and accomodating.

Good value lower-end hotel

Great spot to explore Victoria from. Having valet service was an outstanding plus, even if we had to wait a few minutes for our car. The rooms are basic and clean. The wireless internet was not accessible from our room on the fourth floor in the corner. I would stay again if the price were right. It is leaps and bounds better than any Travellers Inn, Paul's Motor Inn or the Red Lion Victoria - all of which I've stayed in. Be forewarned that sports teams from visiting schools stay there and it can be a bit noisy. Clean and comfortable beds. Basic toiletries and amenities. Bottled water available in the room.

Poor quality hotel

by TripAdvisor Member ThanomsMom

We arrived in the late afternoon on a week night. Had requested a quiet room. Requested help with luggage. Ended up doing it ourselves as the man first appeared, then disappeared, then reappeared after we had already loaded the cart. We took the cart up ourselves. Valet parking pretty much required due to location. The clerk at the desk associated our car key with another room. I caught it before it became a problem. Then she said there was one room associated with our computer record and another on a paper she had in her hand. Got to room. Coffee maker was clearly broken with piece of it on top of the maker showing it was broken! Reported it immediately and was told we could not have a new one until housecleaning came in at 7 a.m. the next day. Hotel has wireless access. Could not get connected in the room. Was told to come to desk to get "booster". Then it worked. The room was facing the street. It was very noisy way into the night. We are planning to leave the hotel as soon as we find a better one.

Great hotel

by TripAdvisor Member daddy3x

Great hotel located close to Victoria attractions (Empress Hotel, Chinatown, Butchart Gardens, and BC Ferries. Hotel room was spacious and had two queen beds, along with a queen sofa bed. It also had a kitchen with frig, microwave, stove and coffee maker. Staff was helpful and knowledgable. Great hotel for families

Great hotel near the Via Rail station

by TripAdvisor Member Brocks

We were looking for a hotel close to the Via Rail station as we were taking the train up-island at 8 the following morning. The Carlton Plaza offered a good rate - much cheaper than Swans Hotel and not much further away. Our room was on the 7th floor. It was large with a huge deck-nice in the summer. It also had a microwave, dishes and utensils. I think the rooms have possibly been re-furbished and I would definitely recommend it. As with all downtown hotels in Victoria, it is within walking distance to everything.

Kinda disapointed....

by TripAdvisor Member angel_pie141

Really just a place to sleep and go. You wouldn't want to stay in the room for too long. I was in Room 624 (6th floor). We stayed for 1 night.

1. Rooms:
The bed was REALLY REALLY soft....back pains after waking up. (our Kingsize looked more like a Queen...) Our room had a coffee maker...but no coffee (we only realized this the day we left). The room wasn't very decorated. White walls...a bed, and a desk with a couple of lamps and a TV. Looks like what you get at a motel.
2. Enviroment:
Noisy. You could hear neighbors laughing and because I think it is near some bars and suff...really noisy at night. There was this hotdog cart outside our room which was open after midnights, people were so loud while eating their hotdogs.
3. Service:
Well not exactly friendly or rude, they just had neutral faces....Valet parking is a MUST! you HAVE to Valet park if you drive because ther ARE NO PARKING SPOTS. If you drive a fancier car (BMW, Benz) be sure to show the guy how to lock your car...cause our car was not locked while parked outside for almost 2 hours without any attention, because he didn't know which button to press!
4. Location:
Location was great. Close to everything and everywhere! Generally all walk distant, just depends on if you wanna walk or drive.
5. Food:
Won't suggest the DeDutch there... I know certain Dedutch are good, but don't choose this one (at the hotel lobby)....not all that good.
6. Entertainment:
TV, nothing else. I think there is a fitness center...didn't go their, don't know what they have.

Overall, average. I got the rate $92.00 on Entertainment.com, I don't really think it is worth it. Won't suggest it! you will be disapointed!!

Great location

by TripAdvisor Member CharInBC

I liked this hotel. It was centrally located and within walking distance to the parliament buildings, and other tourist locations. We didn't rent a car, so being in a central location worked for us. At check-in the clerk was pleasant enough. I found the beds to be quite comfortable; the room was very clean (the bathroom spotless). I really liked the shower...it was one of those rain type shower heads, so not a lot of pressure. The kitchen had a full size fridge and stove...I suppose this would be a good thing if you were planning on spending more time and didn't want to eat out every night. The cupboards were fully stocked with dishes, pots and pans. There was a microwave, and a two cup coffee maker. The hotel supplied coffee, tea, as well as couple of bottles of water. The large hall closet had a wall safe for valuables (create your own code or use your credit card to activate). The sofa in our room had a pull-out that was quite comfortable. There was also an extra blanket available in the hall closet (for the pull-out). This hotel had a dated decor, but was clean and budget friendly with many restaurants, shops, and boutiques nearby.
