If you don't mind sharing a room this is the place to be. You can't beat the price at 35.00 per night and the location. If you book in a group they will try to put you in the room with your buddies.
The kitchen area is typical hostel style.
I had a pleasant stay with no problems. You can walk to the lift and the bus to the village is right across the street.
Unique Quality: Great restaurant the south side diner is located under the hostel.
I need to be in Vancouver for work in the beginning of June and I was very happy to see this is only a few hours travel from whistler/blackcomb. Since I always wanted to go down those canadian pistes I plan to go a few days early (june 1st till 4th) and do a little snowboarding there. However, I am used to the austrian alps and I have no idea what to expect, I checked the sites and the winterseason seems to end on the 4th of june. But is the snow it still any good by that time? Is the soutside lodge in whistler a good place to stay (also logistically) and is it worth taking my own gear?
Thanks!!
Glacier skiing only at this time
it's spring/summer...no snow left. still a nice place to visit if you want to hike or bike.
as said, glacier skiing is the only option so it's not worth lugging your gear with you. Whistler offer great accomodation. I think Southside Lodge is actually near the gondola so its a good place although you'd better do some checking as to the exact location. Also Perimeter Bus runs regularly to Whistler so you won't have to drive and actually enjoy the vistas more.
That time of year the rates are a bit lower, so I would try to stay in the main village rather than southside. You'd be nearer the action (there's lots of summer activities in and near Whistler), nearer places to rent mountain bikes if you are into that. There would still be enough snow on the mountain tops that alpine hiking wouldn't be too good, but not enough snow to ski or board. However, taking the gondolas/chairs to the top would be possible for great alpine views. And there are lots of sub-alpine hikes in the area.
