Two young aussies

by rachel.Br

My friend and i are travelling to canada in Jan 2011, Just wondering how to get a good job? also living wise whats the costs per month, and how do i find reasonable living with out signing a huge lease because we are going to be in canada for 4 months then going to europe then possibly coming back to canada..

Cheers!

Hi, the first step is to get a work visa. Contact the Canadian embassy near you since there might be special dispensation for Australians due to Commonwealth considerations.

Where did you plan on staying? Canada is big - there are differences in cost of living and how rent contracts are structured depending on the city you're in.

The majority of mountain related jobs will be filled by October-ish. Same goes for accommodation. Without supplied mountain accommodation, and coming late in the season, you'll have to take what you can get. Forget about getting anything for just the two of you, and you'll be lucky to find anything in the same place. The good news is there are more Aussies in Whistler than Canadians, and they do their best to impersonate a clown car fitting as many people into a small space as possible to cut down costs.\

However, many housemates require you have a job before taking you in, but employers often insist you have a place to live before hiring you. Good luck

Generally to get a work permit, you will need to demonstrate that you have skills that cannot be supplied locally and often you will need to have an employer lined to too.

Sorry, after reading the other replies, I see you put this in the Whistler forum. My fault for posting too early in the morning.

It is assumed that as 2 young Aussies will be on a working holiday visa

Also get a very warm coat - or maybe 2 or 3 warm coats. You are going to go from summer temps to very very cold!

Travel Tips for Whistler

Having fun comes with a cost...

by DrexelDragon

You can expect to feel like this in the morning if you don't drink water before going to bed. You can then expect to essentially lose a day of your ski pass, because your day on the mountain is going to consist of mostly green runs since you're hungover. The whole trip.

The greatest Apres Ski

by LIsaanne about The Duhb Linn Gate

What do you look forward to more? The first run of the day on fresh powder OR the last run of the day, heading down the hill towards a nice cold beer? The Dubh Linn Gate is THE place to go for Apres Ski. Right at the bottom of the Whistler Gondola and at the entrance to the VIllage. You might have to wait a bit for your beer cause it's so busy but just relax and enjoy the atmosphere... Strongbow Cider!!!

Whistler Gondola

by ChadSteve1975

The Gondola takes you up from the village up to the summit.

Of course in Summer it's just for a look see. In winter it's well a gimme...

In Summer the return ride costs about $20 Canadian. From the top you can walk around a path upto toward the snowline depending on how much it has receded.

Mountain Bike riders can't go all the way to the top. They hop off at the midstation.

Up the top there are helicopter rides and a few other things. The shop in the summer has a few sales of clothing which was good value when I was there.

PEAK TO PEAK GONDOLA

by RACCOON1

The PEAK TO PEAK Gondola is the latest toy at Whistler/Blackcomb. New for the 2008/2009 winter season and just in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics. An 11 minute ride from the Rendezvous Lodge on Blackcomb to the Roundhouse Lodge on Whistler. At mid-point the gondola is some 1500 feet above the valley below. Not really that scary and the Gondola can certainly take high winds. Two of the 28 gondolas ( the silver ones) have a glass bottom which is cordoned off so you do not stand on the glass. The PEAK TO PEAK GONDOLA is similar to the Kitzbuhel S3 gondola , but a little higher and longer , so the design has been tested .

Whistler-Blackcomb

by twilk76

"FRESHIES!!!"

I have been to many ski resorts in New Mexico and Colorado, but nothing comes close to Whistler-Blackcomb. This mountain is huge. One lift ticket gives you access to both peaks! You can ski all day on one of the peaks and not hit all the runs. My favorite of the two, has to be Blackcomb. The terrain park on Blackcomb is amazing.
