Whistler/Blackcomb

"Whistler Winter"
We have had a condo at Whistler for over 16 years and I have skied Whistler since 1965. This has to be one of the best seasons ever. Even today, April 19th, the ski conditions were like mid January (and pretty cold too!) with sunshine and tons of snow for this time of year. In fact, although Whistler's last day of skiing is tomorrow, Blackcomb is open until June. We had a great day today, although, it was cold, it was sunny.
"Whistler in the Summer"
Whether you come up in the summer or the winter, Whistler is a wonderful place to visit. Summers can get pretty warm, even hot. You can swim in the lakes, hike, mountain bike, raft, golf, even ski on the Blackcomb Glacier in July! Lots of stores for shopping, truly a beautiful village.
"The Woodrun Lodge"
We have had a beautiful 3 bedroom condo at Whistler for 8 years and enjoy all seasons at Whistler. It is true ski-in/ski-out during the ski season and close to all the great activities in the summer and fall. We often rent it out.

Blackcomb or Whistler?
by ElGreco99
Howdy, we are boarders looking to get out to Whistler asap but cannot decide where to stay. Blackcomb mountain looks more interesting but Whistler is the 'name' so we are still not sure. We are all beginners but moving into intermediate. Any tips?
Cheers

Hi
I used to live in Vancouver and often went to Whistler to snowboard. If you're staying in Whistler then you can access both mountains as they are right next to each other. There is no need to choose one or the other. I used to go on both and they are both excellent.
Happy planning.

As noted above there is no problem moving between mountains. You can ski one area in the morning and the other in the afternoon bur you have to come down to the base .As a rule you ski one mountain one day and the other the next day and alternate.
This will all change Nov 2008 when the Peak to Peak Gondola starts up.
There are three genreal areas in which you can stay which may be an issue.
Creekside is the lowest and snow may be slushy at the bottom.
Whistler village is slightly higher ( not much) and the snow at the base will be less slushy than at Creekside.
Upper Blackcomb Village is again higher and thus there is less chance of slushy snow.
Some people prefer Whistler while others prefer Blackcomb.
Generally speaking the Beginner runs at Whistler/Blackcomb are more difficult than at European Resorts. Ditto for Blues , and Blacks.

A further note. The food on the mountain side reataurants is better in Europe than at Whistler or North America in general.

You are OK with Woodrun. We stayed at the Aspens which is just next door. Its a short walk into the Village but there is a free shuttle bus. Best supermarket is the IGA store at the north end of the village.Again use the shuttle . Closest wine store is in the Chateau area but its expensive there and the inventory is small. Try the store in the village.

There is a really cool mobile recreation guide and map of Whistler that shows the village and valley area and lists all of the accommodations. You can play it on your iPhone or iPod Touch. It's free at iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/seewhistler/id339077760?mt=8
