Travel from Winnipeg to Chicago...

by vicks222

We are travelling from Saskatoon to Nova Scotia. We would like ot make a pit stop in both Winnipeg and London. I hear the best way to do this would be to drive down through the states, hitting Chicago. Does anyone know how long this would take? Any helpful hints? Thanks.

why miss some of the most beautiful scenery in Canada. You may save some time BUT U have to enter US and dance there dance, ya got a passport :(. I would recommend driving winnipeg to Espanola, then south to manitoulin island, FYI largest freshwater island in the world. The ferry to tobemory. BUT ferries don't start running till may 24 weekend. Manitoulin is quiet, peaceful, bit like going back in time, no fast food, retail shops on the entire island. Plus you can go peacefully down mellow roads into london....

Travel Tips for Winnipeg

Visit a park in Winnipeg.

Visit a park in Winnipeg.
This city has several large, grassy parks.
The largest is Assinniboine Park, which is on Corydon Ave. In the park, there is a conservatory with a cafe, an art gallery with a restaurant, and a little steam train you and the kids can take a ride on. A sculpture park and a beautiful garden are located in this park in addition. The zoo is located in the west part of the park.

St. Vital Park (in South Winnipeg) is a quiet, wooded park and a nice place to take a walk.

Kildonan park (in North Winnipeg) is a large park with a nice garden and 'The Witch's Hut' which has a nice skating trail down the creek in winter.

King's Park (by the University of Manitoba) is a great park for long walks or dog walking. It has a large open-leash area.

There are many other nice parks in Winnnipeg. Consult your map to find some of them.

Alcohol in Manitoba

by Redlats

The legal drinking age in the province of Manitoba is 18 years. If you look 20ish, you will be asked for ID when buying alcohol or entering a pub. It is illegal to drink alcohol in public other than in a licensed premise. You are allowed to drink in private. In your private residence, hotel room or camping spot, etc.

Regarding drinking and driving, Manitoba has very strict laws about this. There are two levels where if you are caught, you will be in trouble. If you have .05 % alcohol in your blood, you earn a ticket, and you are not allowed to drive your car home. If you have .08 % alcohol (or more) in your blood, you can lose your vehicle, your driver's licence and I don't know what else.

To buy alcohol, there are provincially-run and owned) Liquor Commissions - stores that sell liqour, wine and beer (not refridgerated). They are somewhat convenient (open Mondays to Saturdays) -- not as convenient as it would be if we could buy wine in a grocery store.

Many hotels also have a 'beer store'. They tend to have cold beer. Prices are the same no matter which type of store you buy your beer from. There are also some private wine stores, but they tend to sell only the high-end stuff.

Little train for young at heart

by Hermanater

"ASSINIBOINE VALLEY RAILWAY"

At the edge of the Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg is a spot to take the kids for a ride on a little train. While the Assiniboine Park has it's own train rides, there is a private track at the edge of the park that offers rides on it's trains. There is no charge. Donations are accepted. The owner has a few acres of land and has put a small scale track through it. A steam railroader's club in Winnipeg bring their trains here to play. The cars are big enough for one person each. This is a cool introduction for kids to the railroading hobby.

Drive west on Corydon Ave. past the main gate to the Assiniboine Park. Right at the edge of the park is a little gravel alley with a little sign that says "Train Rides". Follow this rode to the owner's house.

Remeber - this is private property so be respectful.

Lower Fort Garry - Explore Manitoba History

by Srechko

One thing you don't want to miss in Winnipeg is pay a visit to Lower Fort Garry. It is very unique place to explore piece of Manitoba history. You will have an opportunity to step back into 19th century and see how people lived when fur trading was the main type of business. Costumed interpreters/actors (by the way it is very difficult to confuse them) re-enact events that happened in mid 1800-s. I got to talk to the woman whose husband went beaver hunting, and she is making him lunch (play-lunch nothing was really cooking...). We also discussed the news from 19th century. Also you can get into the local store and negotiate exchanging your rolex watch to a piece of very nice bear fur - lots of fun!

It is easy to get there by car - it is just a half an hour drive north from downtown Winnipeg and a few minutes south of Selkirk on Highway #9 (Main Street).
