Re: places to know in Winnipeg

I know it won't help him right now but if he is there through next summer, Winnipeg has the biggest and best folk festival in North American. We've been at least 5 times and loved it! And it's a really well organized event attended by all ages: families to young people to grandparents. The music is amazing - blues, world, country, bluegrass, zydeco, etc - and tickets, IMHO, are very reasonable for the amount of performers he'll get to hear.

It's held in early July out at Birdshill Provincial Park, a few miles, outside of the city. It's a huge, really nice park and hopefully they still have shuttles from downtown so no problem if he doesn't drive.

Travel Tips for Winnipeg

US money works

by crmeers

I was very pleased that I didn't have to go through all the hassle of exchanging money. In most places in Winnipeg they accept American money, and since Canadian and American money were basically equal in worth, they didn't even price differently.

Friendly Manitoba

by Unknownsu

Although many of my friends in Winnipeg would disagree with me, I think that a majority of Winnipegers are extrememly nice people hence on their license plate, 'Friendly Manitoba'. I once drove my car halfway into a ditch due to slippery weather conditions. (You wouldn't believe how scared I was) I got out and just stared in disbelief. Before I even thought of waving anyone down, numerous cars stopped while the drivers started getting out doning their mitts/gloves. We managed to push the car out and I was so grateful to be in Canada!

Packing List

by Athos_13

In the winter (Nov-Apr.) bring a very warm jacket, gloves, a toque might not be a bad idea, whatever, just bring appropriate gear for extreme cold. It gets very cold in Jan and Feb (-35 C) not including the wind.

In the summer it is quite the opposite it can get hot with temps going up to 33 C and higher. For this weather shorts, light shirts, and the like are fine.

Fall and Spring can be anything in between, but the Red River and its tributaries threaten to flood every spring, making that time of the year wet and cool, with the odd hot day stuck in for good measure. In the summer definitely bring insect repellant as the mosquitos can be horrid, sunscreen is also recommended.

The Old Pinawa Dam

by Hermanater

This Dam was one of the first built in Manitoba. It was used to supply power for electric trolleys in Winnipeg.

The dam is located just off a gravel road between the towns of Pinawa and Lac du Bonnet. It is about 1 1/2 hours north east of winnipeg

The dam has picnic spots and a play ground. There are spots to go swimming.

Fondest Memory:
When we were walking back to the playground from the dam, we came upon a garter snake. It just happened that we had the snake surronded. This snake was about 12 inches long. It moved towards my 3 yr old son. Being his first time seeing a snake, he ran backwards VERY fast, never taking his eyes off the snake. He screamed louder then I thought possible. Next time he talked to grampa and gramma, he told them about how a snake chased him and tried to kill him....

Birds Hill Provincial Park

by Redlats

Approximately 45 minutes from downtown Winnipeg you will find Birds Hill Provincial Park. This is a multi-use park which Winnipeggers use as a day trip destination.

We have hiked or skied most of the park's trails -- my favourite is the Cedar bog hike in winter. Besides the many trails (for hiking, skiing, bicycle riding, horseback riding, etc.), the park has swimming ponds and camping. In fact for the past 30 years, it has been the site of the Birds Hill Folk Festival each summer. I checked out the swimming area in the summer of 2005 for the first time in 20 years, and it is a great place to go swimming.

Bird's Hill Park has quite a history -- it became a park in 1967 (Canada's Centennial). The park area was referred to as "Pine Ridge", and was farmed unsuccessfully in the late 1800's. The park area was used by families to camp during the great Red River floods. You can still find signs of homesteading on some of the trails, but it feels pretty wild in most of it now.
