Lead Me Somewhere.

by johnnydawn

I want to spend some time in Winnipeg around real and ordinary people in a common neighborhood. Where do I seek this setting. I've never been to Canada before. It's a fantacy of mine to eventually retire there.

Well Johhny, I haven't been to Winnipeg, I live much further west. But until someone else answers: I'd venture that meeting "real and ordinary people" in Winnipeg won't be quite as difficult as looking for "real and ordinary people" in Cancun! If you're one of those gifted people who just effortlessly meets people wherever you go, no problem. Just go. If not, connect through some common interest, either before you go or when you get there.

"Prairie people" do have a reputation for being friendly.

there are two neighborhoods that come to mind, one is Osborne Village, located a little bit north of central downtown, many punky/earthy people tend to flock there, many restaurants and bars/cafes there, good shopping during the day...and the second is Corydon, which is near that area as well, more sophisticated in a sense, sometimes they´ll shut down the street to have a live local band perform a concert...many restaurants, cafes, and bars as well, shopping good during the day as well...it`s also refered to as `Little Italy.`

Travel Tips for Winnipeg

Some people have asked, and yes, we really do have big yellow school busses. They're cold in the winter, hot in the summer, and always seem to have a lingering smell of sweaty teen aged boy, but it was how I got to school every day for 14 years.

It's Pitch "Daylight" at 9PM at Night!

by aphrodyte

What was such a life preserver was the NIGHT MASK...I know, I know...how prissy! But let me tell you that we visited in mid-July and we had a great dinner after which I snuck out for a cigarette break and it was clear and sunny out...that would not normally bother me however...it was 9 PM. Crazy!

Beaches

by Redlats

What does Manitoba have that places like Alberta or Ontario don't? We have beaches, cottages, camping and vacations spots galore. (Manitoba has 100,000 lakes).

For instance, only 70 minutes from Winnipeg is Grand Beach. Soft sand, warm clean water (well warm in summer anyways), girls -- there are guys too, but who cares about them. Grand Beach has been rated as one of the top ten beaches in the world by Playboy Magazine (but what do they know?)

Kenora (Ontario) is 200kms East of Winnipeg. The drive there is gorgeous, the prairie gives way to the rocks of the Canadian shield and then the lake appears. Explore the town, hang out on the beach at Coney Island, go canoeing or camping. It's a great retreat from the city.

Fude Inspired Cuisine & Wine Bar

by Babzz about Fude Inspired Cuisine & Wine Bar

The atmosphere and service are great. The quality and appearance of the food is also great, but we weren't impressed with the menu. On both occasions, we both had trouble finding something we wanted to eat! The combination of ingredients is unusual and may not appeal to all tastes. Oddly, we like to try new foods and combinations, but none of their items appealed to us much. Also, it's expensive - nothing under $20, which, in our opinion, wasn't worth it for what we were getting. We tried it twice, some stuff was nice, but we won't be returning here. Far too many other restaurants to sample in Winnipeg! The pork tenderloin with pork chutney is delicious. The bison ribs are also very nice and tender. The appetizer prawns are tasty. The chocolate chicken is on the dry side. Try the appetizer before ordering the dish in case you don't like it. Menu available on their website.
