Winnipeg Thriftlodge: Sketchy at best (and not all that cheap)

I ran across someone on another travel site recommending the Thiftlodge as a nice budget motel, and was a bit shocked. It's sketchy at best, and the on-site bar is both run-down and pretty violent. I'd avoid this place like the plague, personally (and this is from a girl that has slept in bus stations many times). The bar is too out of control, especially on the weekends, and many of the rooms are rented to those same partiers. To top it off, the rooms aren't actually that cheap (in the $70 range last time I was there). There's far safer, cleaner and cheaper budget motels to be had in Winnipeg.
Nasty bar, overpriced rooms, and cranky staff. Also unique: the odd odor that seems to be some combination of booze can and B.O. permeating the rooms
