Shear's Place in Rocky Harbor: Homestay

Dot is a wonderful lady who has plenty to offer. She will provide much needed assistance and direction. Also she has many books about Newfoundland and it's people. She charges $50 per night which seems to be the going rate for B&B places in Rocky Harbour. When you come into the harbor on Pond Rd you turn right. Go past the "treasure box" store and you will see the laundromat on your left. Across the laundromat you will see a sign on the right saying "Shear's place" Turn right at the sign. There is another Shear's place B&B but I have no information about it.

Birchview Bed & Breakfast: Birchview makes you feel right at home

We stayed in Deer Lake for a night before catching our plane to Montreal the following day, and chose the Birchview B&B for its lower-than-average prices.

Run by a very friendly retired couple, the Birchview is well-located in Deer Lake, being within a reasonable walking distance from any venue of interest to tourists. The energetic Florence will undoubtedly remind you of a cuddling aunt or grand-mother from your childhood, while Art is more of the quiet, laid-back type. Both of our gracious hosts were adorable when they put on their chefs' hats to cook breakfast (which was delicious, by the way!

Deer Lake Motel

The Deer Lake Motel is a nice and simple motel located along the Trans-Canada Highway close to the town of Deer Lake and it's airport. It is about 20 minutes walking distance from Deer Lake if you walk along the highway. The most important thing about Deer Lake Motel is that it is just across the road to Irving Big Stop, which is a very important coach and bus pick-up point for the DRL Coach Service which are the only public coaches running from Port Aux Basque to St John's (and the other way). It is also a bus pick-up point for buses going from Corner Brook to Gros Morne National Park and beyong (e.g. along the Viking Trail all the way to St Anthony's). More information about public transportation in Newfoundland will be available in my VT Newfoundland page soon.

Evergreen B&B: Very Friendly B&B

We spent one night at the Evergreen on our way north through Rocky Harbour and, because we liked it so much, we paid a return visit as we passed through again on our way home.

Located in Rocky Harbour not far from the main centre of activity, this is a nice establishment run by a very friendly Newfoundland couple. We had a great time chatting to them and the other guests around the breakfast table as we compared notes on our trip progress to date. In the lower accommodations area, there is a sitting room with a TV available for the guests if they wish to use it. We paid C$45 per night for the two of us (US$33).
