St. Alban's is another community just a few minutes down the winding road in that area. The scenary along the drive is beautiful but you have to be careful during January for ice, slush and snow. We went to the motel there for supper one night and had a great meal. The chef salad was popular there and in a very big porportion. I remember the pan fried trout looked very good as well. The hotel looked a little more modern than the Vancor out at the Head of Bay d'Espair but it was a little further away from Conne River and didn't have a bar.
I stayed at the Vancor motel in a little town called the Head of Bay d'Espair. When driving into this community to need to look to the right hand side. It's on a hill and very easy to miss the first turn off going up the hill. Once you check in you should be prepared to adjust yourself to the local hospitality and relax. The hotel has a bit of a dated decor but was under new management at the time of my visit. Some colleagues didn't think the beds and stuff were the cleanest but I konked out there just fine. The food in the dining room was also good.
If you want to experience the local hospitality ask about the ladies dart league. This is one night a week when all the local people come out to play darts and have a good time. That's about as much as you'll find for entertainment at that time of year.
