The Island Inn: B&B in Ingonish
A very nice place - the Island Inn is run by a young woman and her baby boy Jacob (or at least he enjoys entertaining the guests!). Located in Ingonish at the western part of the Cabot Trail, the inn is a good place for an overnight stay after having done the National Park.
All rooms are clean and rustically furnished and most of them have their own bathroom. Breakfast is served downstairs in a nice room and is very tasty. The B&B is quite international, so when I had breakfast there I met a group of Germans and enjoyed exchanging opinions and tips about the Cabot Trail with them. Little Jacob enjoys this internationality too and babbles foreign words if only you tell him often enough... :)
Unique Quality: breakfast, nice owner

Bed and Breakfasts: Lodgings around Cape Breton Highlands NP
We were surprised how difficult it was to find lodgings in September near the national park. We were staying in B&B's and whereas in the rest of Nova Scotia in September, we did not have to reserve rooms, when we came to Cheticamp at the edge of Cape Breton Highlands park, we phoned all the B&B's and found no rooms.
We actually found a spot at a B&B that night because it was not listed correctly in the book. That evening we decided to book our B&B's for the whole area around the park, and we still did not get to stay at our first choices.
As there is no housing actually inside the park, you have to book in the communities at the edge of the park -- like Pleasant Bay, Dingwall, South Harbour or Ingonish and the like.
Even booking ahead, we had difficulties, and had to settle for B&B's in White Point (about 15km off Cabot Trail), and in Wreck Cove (about 15km past Cape Breton Highlands park on the east side.
On our whole Nova Scotia trip, we only had difficulties finding rooms at these towns next to Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Nowhere else on our trip could we not find B&B rooms quite easily each evening (in September).
