Summer budget stays in Halifax

Halifax has quite a few universities and most of them offer summer accommodations for tourists in the student residences/dorms for very good prices. Most dormitories use shared toilet and shower facilities and breakfast may or may not be included in the dining hall but most universities are very close to restaurants or cafes where you can get food. Accomodations available from May to August.

Dalhousie
St. Mary's They have both private and shared facilities available
Mount St. Vincent They have traditional dorms and some apartment facilities.

For Singles

.

Unique Quality: During the summer months, Dalhousie rents out dorm rooms to travelers.

This won't be an option for the 2005 summer session as the rooms will be closed for rennovation.

You stay in a small room with a single bed and eat in a cafetieria (if you choose to).

This place is fine if you are single but not so comfortable if you are with a significant other or are with your family.

It's a good choice to stay here if you want to keep up your fitness routine because you get free access to Dalplex which is the University fitness centre. Dalplex has an Olympic sized pool, cardio (which you will have to pay for), outdoor volleyball, outdoor tennis, basketball courts, racquetball courts, squash courts, a rock climbing facility (extra), a kids play area, a weight room, a circuit training room, and an indoor track

Inexpensive and Comfortable

I highly recommend staying at one of the dorms belonging to Dalhousie University if you are in Halifax during the summer months. The prices are good, the rooms are clean and the staff are very helpful. It's also great because you have free access to their computers! ;o)

Shirreff Hall was very nice but a little too far from downtown for me. I ended up taking taxis more than I wanted to but you can walk if you don't mind the almost half-hour journey. Well, I think it was about half an hour. It is a lovely street so it's really not too bad. However, please don't attempt the walk at night. Like any city, there are dangers that lurk in the darkness.

Shirreff had a phone in the lobby where you could call for a taxi which was really convenient.

Unique Quality: Computer lab was very handy. You are allowed up to an hour, if I remember correctly.

I shared a 3-bedroom suite with mates which had its own bathroom and a livingroom with sofa, desk and refrigerator. That was VERY inexpensive. Each room had 2 twin beds so among all of us, I ended up paying only about $40 US for a 3-night stay!

On my last day at Shirreff, I was not due at the airport for several hours after check out time so the staff held my luggage in a locked room off the lobby while I spent more time downtown. They may still offer this very convenient service.
