Stayed there and got BED BUGS.
Was told they are a fact of life and not issued a refund for nights I did not stay due to bites I received.

An alternative way to stay in Halifax
Halifax's Backpacker's Hostel is located conveniently in Gottingen Street close to the Citadel Hill. It's an interestingly decorated place with steep and narrow stairs and hallways. Everybody there is very friendly and very alternative. Internet can be used for free, the rooms are clean and the breakfast (self-made banana muffins!!!) is great. All in all a good and cheap place to stay when in Halifax.

looked like a cool place to stay....
Actually, we had a reservation for this place but we were more or less chased by Hurricane Juan into town three days earlier than expected so it was full when we arrived. It looked like a very cool place and the neighborhood was interesting too, with a great African restaurant right up the street. It might be a bit dodgy at night but during the day, it looked like a great place to hang out and really, it's not far from the historic center anyway. Dorm space was CAN$ 20 and doubles were CAN$ 50.
Unique Quality: I guess if I had to do this all over again, I would reserve a room at the YHA hostel at 1253 Barrington Street. It is a more convenient location for sightseeing and especially for going out at night. In fact, it's right across the street from the best brewpub in town, The Henry House (another Granite Brewery location). Details for the hostel at http://www.hihostels.ca/ but similarly priced as the Halifax Backpackers place.
