The Sugar Maple Bed and Breakfast: It's all good, but ohhhh that maple syrup!
When we planned our Canadian maritimes visit, we decided to stay in bed and breakfasts, and to stay away from major cities. We chose - partly because of the Sugar Maple Bed and Breakfast - to stay in Springhill, Nova Scotia for several days. It was centrally located, and offered the chance to explore a different part of NS each day. BTW, I found this bed and breakfast the same way I found most of the others, via CanadaBB.com, an excellent site.
The Sugar Maple is a family home. They have two children (ages 9 and 11) and it operates like a family home. And like any family home, they have their events.... Our visit got off to a tough start, as the day we arrived, the driveway was being paved. Apparently the owners had waited ALL summer for the pavers to show up, and finally they did... on our arrival day. It meant we had to park out on the road for a couple of days, but it really wasn't much of an issue. Linda gave us a nice discount for our "trouble". We were also present for the end of their younger son's birthday party, so that was a bit wild. But, we went back into town for dinner and when we returned, all was peaceful and quiet at Sugar Maple.
Linda and Craig McCormick are the owners and they do a fine job of anticipating and meeting the needs of their visitors. The two rooms that they rent are quite large, and well appointed. My daughter loved the hottub in mine and Bonnie's room, and we had to "share" on a couple of evenings.
Linda and Craig gave us lots of good information for our daily journies, including directions and suggestions for places to eat. In our stay in Springhill, we really felt like we "met" the town.... we ate at many of the local places, and we even went into a dive bar one night. (My daughter was anxious to enjoy Canada's 19 year old drinking age) We did fine in there once I shocked the "doorman" (the drunk guy near the door) by knowing that Ottawa was the capital of Canada. :) OK, back to the Sugar Maple.....
THE thing about the Sugar Maple, besides the relaxing and friendly welcome and the comfortable and spacious accomodations are the breakfasts.... Basically, they have three or four "menus" and you tell them the night before what you'd like. We tried several options and all were terrific. As for the best, it's hard to go against blueberry pancakes and locally made maple syrup. BTW, the maple syrup is actually made by a Sugar Camp/farm that Craig and his cousin(s) own and operate. He gave us a tour of the place one afternoon and that was most enjoyable. We've traveled in New England quite a bit, and we love Vermont. We'd always felt that Vermont maple syrup was THE best. That sentiment is now past-tense. The maple syrup that Craig's camp makes is THE best ever - light and sweet, just perfect. We bought 500 ml and brough it home with us.
Unique Quality: You'll be treated like family, and I realize that for ALL bed and breakfast lovers, that's not always a goal. For us, it's fine. If you want a place that's more like a little inn, then the Sugar Maple is not your place. If you want to be welcomed, cared for, and well-fed, then Sugar Maple is the place.
Again, the breakfasts...... the maple syrup is amazing. And bacon.... well, this IS Canada, a bacon-loving country. One morning, Craig was preparing breakfast and he apologized for a delay in serving bacon. His comment was that "good bacon cannot be rushed". I told Linda about it later that afternoon and she laughed, saying that Craig was a true bacon perfectionist. I agree, good bacon cannot be rushed, and they had terrific bacon at Sugar Maple.
The Sugar Maple also has a dependable free Wi-Fi system, and they have satellite TV in the great room - which is generally reserved for guests' use during their stay.
The Sugar Maple advertises "country living at its finest" and it couldn't be more true.
