Places to Go, Sports to See
by CdnJane
Barrie is home to sports... all year round.
What's your sport?
Hockey? Well there are lots of teams around, from school teams to the Barrie Colts of the OHL(Ontario Hockey League). There is a very active Minor Hockey League for all levels. A number of arenas around the city to chose from too.
Skating - Barrie is home to the world famous, Mariposa Skating Club, but there are lots of other skating programs around as well.
Skiing - Alpine and Nordic (Downhill and Cross country) throughout the winter, as long as Mother Nature cooperates.
Golfers will find a large variety of clubs in the Barrie area
Sailors love Kempenfeldt Bay for the long deep straight channel for racing. Check out the Barrie Yacht Club.
Boaters will find the city marina plus a couple of other marinas in the area.
There are curling clubs, racket ball/tennis courts, swimming pools... athletic clubs around... as I said, pretty much name your sport and Barrie will have something fo you.
If you like to watch the horses, just south of Barrie is Georgian Downs for harness racing, and there are also slot machines there.
Barrie Speedway for those car enthousists. Depends upon your sport, obviously.
If you don't have the gear, lots of sporting good stores from the sports departments of the Canadian Tire and Walmart stores, to some of the bigger sports specialty stores to the smaller independent sports stores like Garner's Sports.
Lions and tigers and bears oh my!

The Elmvale Jungle Zoo is north of Barrie - maybe a 30 minute drive. Open in the summer only.
Lions, tigers, jaguars, monkeys, chimps, giraffes, elephants ( I think - something big I can't remember)... etc.

Although this pix our kids at Canada pavalion of Epcot, we really enjoyed few hours of family adventure on 16 acre site of this museum located amongst tall pines. This was our first experience with Canadian native cultures.
Arrive with an appetite!
by CdnJane about Shirley's Bayside Grille
My parents have been frequently to Shirley's for lunch and for dinner. They have always raved about the food and the service. I was there for dinner for the first time, and I can certainly understand their praise for the place. It doesn't look like much from the street, but it is much larger and more impressive inside. Quite the Martini selection, it appears, too.
The food servings were amazing - you definitely get your money's worth... and it is quality food too. They don't have wide range of sides, but you know, sometimes too many means that they don't do them well. We had the bruschetta with goat cheese to start. Huge helpings - 4 slices.
I had the striploin steak with Ceasar salad and roast potatoes, and it was all wonderful. One of the best ceasar salads I've had in ages - the proper oil and vinegar and garlic dressing, not that creamy crap! The steak was huge and cooked to perfection.
I would highly recommend it.
My mother just had the appetiser smoked salmon which was plenty big - lots of toast triangles, with lots of smoked salmon, onion and goat cheese.
My father had the roast beef with a huge yorkshire pudding, and vegetables and roast potato. It was a huge hunka beef!
Town Hall
by mikey_e
There isn't anything all that spectacular about Barrie town hall. Its a modern building with little charm, but it is somewhere that you might visit in the summer, for the farmers' market, or in the winter for the skating rink in the pond in the centre of the courtyard.
