Thousand Islands

by cfuentesm

The Thousand Islands is a truly beautiful area. It is bordered by NY State USA and by the Ontario region on the other. Take a boat tour to visit these charming islands. You'll find them small and big, all enchanting. Houses and cottages make them even more magical. Many celebrities have or had a home here. You can take a tour from Gananoque or Rockport.

On our tour Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River have become a wonderful memory. Gananoque is a gateway to the famous 1000 islands and and harbours. The Gananoque Boat Lines takes you around. Gananoque is the nearest town, 16 km ( 10 miles ) west, from the Thousand Islands International Bridge. Gananoque is a native, Indian name meaning "A Place of Health." The St. Lawrence River is connecting the great lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. It's like a small sea. If you are on the boat you might think it's an endless trip!

GANANOQUE & THE THOUSAND ISLANDS

by RACCOON1

The 1000 Islands are located at the east end of Lake Ontario and thus are at the headwater of the St. Lawrence River. The USA - Canadian border cuts the Islands if half. After the War of 1812 the British and Americans , finalized the border in this area, and the work was not complete until 1822. The islands have been split 50/50 by area . There are in fact around 1860 islands and as a result of the location of the border Canada has more islands , around 1000.

There are many things to do in the Islands , mostly summer related activities , such as :
1. Fishing
2. Sailing
3. Camping
4. House Boat Renting
5. Jet Boating
6. Staying at your island cottage , if you are rich
and what most people do , namely taking a river cruise.

Thousand Islands

by valtor

I shall be the first ten days of December in Brockville and Prescott, in a business trip. During the weekend, when I have free time, I would like to visit the place. Unfortunately, I found in internet that there are boats trips to 1000 island only in the spring - summer. The same about Boldt castle and Skydeck.
What can somebody visit NOW - in december? Does the waterfront of Brockville ofer a nice view of islands?

Please give me some ideas.
Thanks a lot.

I am not sure what is opne now , but there is not much of a view from Brockville. Do a slow drive along the 1000 Islands parkway on the Canadian side between Brickville and Gananoque . Better still drive across the bridges for a good view on a sunny day .

Thank you. I am writing now from Brockville. I love it! A small, quite and very nice town. Some nice buildings and nice river view. For one weekend it is OK. I need this peaceful time. It is sunny and very cold and clear. No boat tours.

niagara + thousand islands

by skeyboard

I would like to plan a trip which would include visiting Niagara falls and the thousand islands. Can anyone give me a basic sun- thursday tour plan for this area?
I could spend the first weekend in Toronto, but would like to be able to fly back to NY for the second one.
Thanks.

Sunday-Thursday you say...Is that just 4 days or what..confusing because you want to spend weekend in Toronto..

Naigara falls is essentially one day sightseeing from Toronto if you are driving and if you are not visiting Wineries etc.in the area. Niagara is spectacular but just a touristy gawk.
Now 1000 Islands is another cattle of fish...absolutely wonderful and spectacular. About 3-4 hour drive east on 401 Hwy is the town of Gananoque. You can take a short or a long cruise on a boat and tour the Islands or you can drive on to Rockport,Ivy Lea etc. and glimpse the Islands from the lookouts.
Best idea is to drive on to the 1000 island crossing into the U.S. over Ivy Lea bridge and then East to the Town of Alexandria Bay, N.Y. Beautiful spot to see the Islands, spectacular homes, and the famous Boldt Castle.
How much time you spend would depend on what you like. There is a lot of ground to cover but is well worth it.

Just some extra tips for your trip:
Niagara: also worth a visit: Niagara-on-the-Lake and the Welland Canal Centre (where ships climb a mountain)
1000 islands: Kingston with Fort Henry

Don´t know where you are staying in or around Toronto-Niagara, buw can recommend Robingson B&B in Thorold.

houseboating on Lake Temagami

by Astromaid

We are considering renting a houseboat on Lake Temagami in September, it will be just my husband and myself. Has anyone done this, any recomendations? I have found about 4 rental companies, two have small houseboats with what seems to be small motors, I am concerned that we will not be able to see much of the lake. The others have much larger boats, but I am concerned that just the two of us can handle the larger boat (docking and taking off in the mornings). Any suggestions would be appreciated. The area really sounds wonderful.

We have rented a house boat for the last week in August in the Thousand Islands area. " Houseboat Holidys Ltd" . The boat is 34ft x 12 ft with a
60 HP motor. There are four of us but I have seen only two people on these boats. We have never been to the Temagami region so we have no feel for
the distances you have to travel. But in the 1000 Islands Area you need a
60 HP motor.

I know the area but have never houseboated anywhere-just canoed.
60HP is lots it's not that big.
