This weekend I had the nicest Ontario vacation ever. Goderich is a beautiful town and is rated the most beautiful town in Ontario. It is on Lake Huron.
Ontario has the largest number of fresh water lakes in the world. The five great lakes are known as: Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake HURON, Erie, and Ontario. Lake Huron has many beaches to visit.
Goderich is a few hours away from Detroit city USA and Buffalo city USA. Close to the Niagara falls border too. Use highway 401 West out of Toronto then 7/8 around Kitchener/Waterloo area. You can pass thru Mennonite county the cities of St Jacobs or Elmira. There are great farmer's markets there. Mennonite Quilt shops and furniture shops are common.
The Benmiller inn is actually a number of buildings within one tiny village. There were two mills (one a wool mill) converted into an inn in the 1970's. A number of houses were purchased and included in the project. As many items from the mills were kept and reclaimed to use in decorating. It is located on a river which flows into Lake Huron. There are lovely walking trails or hiking ones. Unless you are staying in the building with the pool then you need to walk or drive to the pool (5-10min) Same for breakfast which is located in the main/registration building. Not a problem when you have a car.
UPDATE THE INN HAS BEEN DAMAGED DUE TO A RECENT TORNADO IN SUMMER 2011
The city of Goderich is close by and there is a farmer's market during the city.
There is a tourist information booth to visit.
Cuthbert's bakery on a side st two blocks by the centre of town is absolutely the best bakery and very inexpensive. Boston creme doughnuts, cinnamon chealsea bread. These are made fresh and the old fashioned way.
