In summer time, one of our favorite pastimes is to go to the cottage at Rice Lake. It's about 3 1/2 hrs of driving to get there, but once you are at the cottage, it's worth the drive. Rice Lake is located off the CN Railroad main line just into the Ontario boarder. We have to drive down rough logging roads for almost an hour to get there.
The best part about being there is that you get away from all the stressful things of everyday life. The cottage has no electricity, no running water & best of all no telephones. Things have been getting a little more modern the last few years as cottages now have generators for electricity(that only get used a few hours a night at best) & most cottages now have ATVs to bring in the supplies from the parking lot which would otherwise be a 20 minute walk thru the bush with supplies strapped to your back as it used to be done not so many years ago. And now, people are also bringing in cell phones to be used in case of emergencies.
But you still have the quietness & seclusion of the lake.
"Cottage at Rice Lake!"
Lynda's cottage was built by her grandfather in 42 because he felt that if he would have to evacuate his family because of the war,he could bring them to Rice Lake in the middle of nowhere. At the time, the only way to get to Rice Lake was to take the train & in fact every one of the cottages in the area including other lakes around the area were built by CNR employees because they would be able to take the train out to the cottages and it would not cost them anything because they all had train boarding passes for working at CN.
I'm told that Lynda's grandfather had to carry everything that was used to build the cottage on his back thru the bush from where the train would drop it off by the tracks which was a 25 minute walk (when your not carrying anything). It must have been very hard work.
The cottage was handed down to Lynda,s dad who has now built a new cottage 10 years ago and in turn has handed down the cottage to Lynda.
"Fishing at Rice Lake!"
One of the best pastimes at the lake is to go fishing. You take your fishing equipment, pack a lunch & bring a few (cold ones) to drink. You then head out for a few hours or for the biggest part of the day depending on how the fish are biting or how nice the weather is at the time. Nothing is more relaxing then just sitting in the boat & chatting while your waiting for the fish to bite. Sometimes the fishing is good & some other times, your lucky if you catch a rock. It still makes for a good day no matter what.
