Rideau Canal/Old Fort Henry - Now a UNESCO Site
by Highbrae
When they moved the Capital of Canada from Kingston (yes it was the first) to Ottawa where it was safe from American invasion (some things never change) they needed a way to get supplies to the middle of the wilderness. Enter the Rideau Canal, which is still a working canal with locks and quaint towns along the path from Lake Ontario at Kingston to Downtown Ottawa near the Parliment Buildings. At the Kingston end of the Rideau Canal stands Fort Henry, plan your visit from May to September when University and College students from across Canada make up the Fort Henry Guard. Wednesday nights offer the world famous Sunset Ceremony. complete with canons and 1800's uniforms.
1000 Islands Skydeck (1000 Islands area)
by sunnywong
The 1000 Islands Skydeck is a unique tourist attraction, the only one of it's kind in the 1000 Islands. Running continuously, the elevator takes only 40 seconds to reach the first (glass enclosed) of three observation decks and provide visitors with a spectacular photographic opportunity as they enjoy the panoramic view of the 1000 Islands and St Lawrence River stretched out 130 metres or 400' below.
Fort Henry
by Deus_ultima
This was a major defence point for the British army. It's considrered as a national historic site. It was built in the early 1800's as a first line of defence for the Rideau Canal. It was the biggest and most costly outpost in America..
Unfortunately, It's only open from May to October, so we didn't get to go in..
:(
BUT it's a MAJOR attraction in Kingston
A City Full of History
by Jefie
Founded in 1673, Kingston is one of "Upper Canada" (Ontario)'s oldest and finest cities. Because of its proximity to Lake Ontario, the city enjoyed much prosperity during the 1800s, which resulted in its being chosen as the first capital of the united Upper and Lower Canadas, before it was moved to Ottawa.
Today, Kingston retains much of its historic beauty, but each year new flocks of students arrive - Kingston is home to both Queen's University and the Royal Military College of Canada - thus keeping the city young, vibrant and alive. A great place to stop when travelling from Toronto to Montreal, and vice versa!
