Traveling Hwy 17 from Thunder Bay to Sault Ste. Marie

by khardy

Where can I find hotels/motels between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie on Highway 17 for a summer trip to Canada? What about in Marathon, Ontario, or Wawa. I would appreciate any information as to points of interest, restaurants, etc. Thanks.

Hi

There would definately be some hotels in Marathon, its a town of about 3500 people. Wawa is a lot smaller, there may be some. I will look in the phone book for ya. Do you have a price range in mind??? Also in case you didn't know it is about 8 hours between TB and SSE so you could go straight there....not sure what your intentions are.

Pic river inn 1 877 742 7483
zero 100 Motor inn 1 800 461 4010

Wawa ( Sorry don't know the area code)

I have never stayed in any of these hotels, so I have no idea about quality. If you have any other questions let me know

Ma Kettle and I have stayed at 'The Water Tower' in Sault Ste. Marie, and can recommend it. It has been a few years, but believe they will have kept it up. Wawa has some nice little motels, but we can't remember the names. If you arrive between four and six, you should have no problems finding a room. After seven, it gets tougher. Great breakfasts in Wawa...also take a moment and enjoy their little museum.

If you travel late at night, be extremely careful of moose crossing the highway. They really can be a danger. Gas stations can be few and far between, and enjoy the black flies...because they will enjoy you.

If you left Thunderbay early in the morning, it is a reasonable drive to do in one day. The sun will be at your back when it is at its fullest.

Enjoy your journey, remember to take your bathing suit. Lots of places to stop and get refreshed, with no one else around. A real treat.
