April weather concerns - traveling with 2 children

by dongix

Hello VT friends. I will appreciate your help. We are visiting Niagara Falls for the first time, for 4 nights and 3 full days starting April 13 to April17. Our two daughters - 1year/11months old and 6 yrs old will be with us.

I'd like to know if anyone has an idea how cold will the weather be during this time? Will it "allow" us to spend time outside doing some sightseeing, going to the park etc, or do the Maid of the Mist or anything outdoor related.

Can you also please advice me on what clothes to bring and anything that we should know if we travel with kids at this time. Thank you so much in advance:)

You could check weather websites to see historical data for those dates. Generally things are cool- not very hot but certainly not freezing, either. I would say it would be sweater weather. The flowers and trees will be blooming, should be a very nice time to visit. The best suggestion is to pack clothes you can wear in layers so you can adapt to changes or unforeseen weather.

Im actually wondering the same thing as I'm there a week after you. I'm certainly taking a warm jacket. The weather around the Toronto area is hovering around 35 - 45F at the moment so its best to be prepared for a cold snap.

You may not get a chance to do the Maid of the Mist boat trip (and I possibly wont either) as the boats do not normally start operating until late April/ early May. You could check their website closer to the dates you are there.

You are heading there in the early spring, before the tourist season. The good news is that there won't be a lot of people visiting, but that also means the attractions may or may not be running.

It's still early spring here, so expect cool mornings (low to mid single digits Celsius) and mid-afternoon highs that could approach the mid teens. Cold from where you are from, I guess, but I would find it pleasant. April can also be quite cloudy and rainy. Warm jackets. You might want to consider hats and gloves, especially for the children, who might chill down quickly. The area around the falls themselves tends to be misty and if the winds are blowing across from the US side, the sidewalks could be quite wet and slippery.

You might want to do your viewing in the middle of the afternoon when things warm up a bit. The Falls are illuminated at night, so that is worth going out for.

Niagara Falls - Spectacular

by megolodon

Obviously the Falls were the most attractive thing about this location and it was the Falls that we went to see.
We stayed at the Sheraton Falls View Hotel, and my did it have some views (as you can see from my photos).
Here is a link to their web site.

This is a very commercialised place but never the less, very friendly and clean. Anyone in the Toronto area, i would recommend hiring a car and driving up there for at least one night.

Niagara on the Lake is also worth a visit as is the One of my fondest memories is going on the Maid of the Mist boat tour. Very worthwhile.
Also, the walk below the falls is pritty cool.

We took a trip to Niagara on the Lake which again i would recommend. This is a lovely little quaint village - check out the Christmas shop. It is also a lovely drive following the "wine" trail. Here is the link for more info http://www.infoniagara.com/attractions/notl/index.html

We took the little bus (paid for the day - you get a little sticker!!)up to the The Whirlpool Aero Car. We decided not to go on it and you get lovely views from the platform without the expense of boarding the car.

We also tool the little bus to the White Water Walk which again I would highly recommend doing. On a lovely day, it is pritty breathtaking. Here is the link to the official page.

We had lovely weather so that makes things so much better.

Fort Erie

If you have a chance drive around. There are a lot to see in 20-50 km from Niagars Falls. One of the places is town of Fort Ere.
The Fort Erie Museum Board operates three sites on behalf of the Town of Fort Erie: the Fort Erie Historical Museum, the Fort Erie Railroad Museum and the Ridgeway Battlefield Site. Fort Erie Historical Museum

Great Gorge Adventure Pass

by Kristin050900

This isn't really an activity, more of a way to save some money. If you have a AAA near you stop in and purchase The Great Gorge Adventure Pass. This is a pass that lets you enjoy some of the attractions at one flat rate instead of paying for eveything seperatly. Included is The Maid of the Mist, White Water Walk, Journey Behind the Falls and The Butterfly Conservatory. You also get free people mover passes for 2 days and a discount at The Spanish Areo Whirlpool Car. You get discounts at some of the food stands, like a free french fry or a beverage.

Use the People Mover shuttles...

by hayward68

Use the People Mover shuttles to get from one area to another.
You buy passes which allow you to hop on and off the buses which visit all the points of interest and go to a lot of the motels in the outer regions.
For info call 1-905-357-9346 or check out following website

People Mover

Excellent place to watch the falls.

by krizt about Don't know but you can't miss it!

We didn't eat here but we sat out on the deck and had a few (probably too many) drinks. It was great because it's right on the Falls walk. Althought we didn't eat- the food looked and smelled really good.
This isn't like a night club or anything. It's just a place to kick back and take everything in. The waiter- and the rest of the staff- was very nice.
