travelling to niagra falls

by johanna_stephens

I will be staying in Ottawa and wish to travel to Niagra falls by train. Is there a direct train and how long does it take?

Via Rail goes there. The station is a good ways from the falls though, so you'll have to take a bus. http://www.niagarafalls.ca/city_hall/departments/transportation_services/transit/bus_routes.asp
You will also have to change trains in Toronto, but the layover shouldn't be too bad.

I don't think there's a direct train, you'd have to change at Toronto. Typical journey time is about 7 and a half hours, including connection time, and expect to pay about $100 CDN + tax. All the info you need is on the www.viarail.ca site.

It's a comfortable journey but not particularly scenic so make sure you have something good to read. Also the buffet can be a bit pricey and so it'd be a good idea to stock up on nibbles too.

No direct trains. All trains from Ottawa terminate in Toronto (or Montreal, but that does not make any difference to you, as you wouldn't be travelling in that direction).

You are looking at about a 4-1/2 hour ride to Toronto and a further 1-1/2 hours from Toronto to Niagara Falls, with about a 1-1/2 hour stop over in Toronto. The train station in Niagara Falls is in the downtown area, i.e. nowhere near the Falls themselves (4 km / 2-1/2 miles), so you will need to take public transit or a taxi to get to the Falls proper.

American Falls

by OlenaKyiv

What a name "American Falls". Like water doesn't go to the same river that wash the banches of both America and Canada. But yes, I understand the comfort of using this name. Briefly, it is the Fall that on the American side. What I liked to see the most is small figures of people on another side of Niagara River that like small ants moved on the hills of the fall being guided to the roaring falling water. It is easy to spot them, because they wear those yellowish panchos.

Ice Wine - Inniskillin Winery

by raevnzno

If you come across this winery on your explorations, by all means stop in.
They are very happy to assist you in choosing a bottle to take home.
If you've never had Ice Wine, you are missing a real treat.

People Mover

by lar-n-me

The People Mover is a good way to get around to the most visited/popular attractions (22 different stops total). They stop at their prearranged stops every 15-20 minutes, you're allowed to ride any people mover with your pass.
One fee allows you to ride the whole day and runs from just above the falls to Queenston Park on the Niagara Parkway.
They don't run the buses from November-March.
Tickets available at stops 1,3,7,8,18 and 20 along the route. Also available at Ride Niagara.

Excellent Italian!!

by dopey1200 about Mama Mia's

All of the 6 adults in my group raved about their meal at Mama Mia's. The service was great, plenty of options on the menu, and a nice atmosphere. I had your basic spaghetti with tomato sauce, but others in my group had veal parmesan, chicken parmesan and spaghetti and meatballs. I guess it's the homemade sauce that makes it so good.
