tours from toronto

by carsal1955

Hi all. I took the tour to Niagara Falls, NOTL etc with Jojo Tours in 2001. Does anyone know if the company is still in business? They are not responding to my emails. With 3 couples wanting to visit the falls and surrounding areas in one day from Toronto late Sept/early Oct what do you all think is the best way of doing it?

I'd rent a six seater and drive (two hours each way). The highway is good but very busy during peak hour with commuters travelling to/from work in Toronto.

I was lucky enough to be able to stay for one night at a hotel overlooking the Falls. I wouldnt do a tour simply because the buses didnt stop for very long at the actual Falls site. If you drive yourself you would get to spend more time enjoying the Falls and you can also go out to Niagara on The Lake if you have time.

I would rent a van and do the drive. It is 90 minutes each way and an easy drive down the QEW. Parking at the Falls is easy too. Check out Niagara-on-the-Lake while you are in the area - it's a very pretty little town and not really out of your way a lot.

If I were you I would take the normal bus: 1st of all it takes you through all the wine regions between here and Toronto and 2nd parking in Niagara is not cheap. There is a lot here to see and do, so unless you are going to spend three days here, you can skip the pretty little towns nearby, like Niagara on the Lake

Tamas - for one or two people, I would look at taking the bus, but with three couples (= 6 people) renting a mini-van would be more flexible and cost effective.

Travel Tips for Niagara Falls

Rainbows

by kris-t

You can see this optical and meteorological phenomenon on Niagara Fall during the whole day.
Sevenfold red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. They say: The light is first refracted as it enters the surface of the raindrop, reflected off the back of the drop, and again refracted as it leaves the drop...

Does it really matter? it's just amazing!

May be that why in Greek mythology the rainbow was considered to be a path made by a messenger (Iris) between Earth and Heaven...

The American Falls

by OlenaKyiv

At the American Falls the water's vertical descent ranges from 21 to 34 metres (70 to 110 feet) to the rock at the base of the Falls.

At 56 metres (180 ft) high, the American Falls is slightly higher than its Canadian counterpart. Its crestline is 328 metres (1075 ft) wide.

The natural bedrock is composed of soft shale and limestone. Over the years the continual flow of water causes large sections of bedrock to fall and remain at the base of the cataracts.

Geologists predict that eventually the American Falls will transform into a succession of descending rapids.

The diversion of water above the falls has slowed the forces of erosion. It is estimated that 75,000 gallons of water flow over the American Falls each second, amounting to only 10% of Niagara's total waterflow.

No one has ever dared to conquer the American Falls in a barrel. All daredevil activities have always concentrated on the Canadian Horseshoe Falls because it has a larger waterflow and fewer rocks at its basin. My best impression from this Fall were rocks at its basis and flying birds so low and so close to water splashes, that I always worried one of them will fall down on the rocks. Scary thoughts, huh?

Chippawa

by malianrob

We got to this town South of Niagara Falls by accident. We were trying to get to Niagara on the Lake but we took a wrong turn. We ended up in Chippawa. Theres not much here to do but you get to see these amazing homes with the largest yards. We drove for about 1/2 an hour just admiring these beautiful homes.

Drive to Niagara Falls.

Getting to Niagara Falls is very easy by car and getting around the city is best with public transportation. There is a parking lot right infront of the main attraction, where the falls is. Often this lot is full. In that case don't panic. just drive on and if you go straight ahead, you will see a big "P" sign for parking.

There is a huge parking and picnic facility about three kilometers (2 miles) from the falls where you can safely leave your car, van, bike, etc. Called: Rapids View Parking Lot. Have a snack or a short picnic and take the shuttle bus down to the falls. The bus price is included in the parking fee.

The cost is about $4- / person. The shuttle bus leaves and arrives every 10, 15 minutes.
This is the most convenient way visiting the falls, the tower, the boat ride and see downtown as well.

On this image you see highway 401 around Toronto as we were going to Niagara. There were about ten lanes all together. Picture is taken from inside the car.

Vineyard Restaurants

by RACCOON1 about Three Vineyard Restaurants

After seeing Niagara Falls you might as well visit some of the vineyards in the Niagara Peninsula. A number of them have good reataurants . Try Strewn , Cave Sorings , and Vineland Estates . The Vineland Estates terrace has the best view.
We were there late August 2003 and had an excellent lunch . Be there at 11:30 to make sure you get a table.
