Vineyards & Winery in Niagara good for visiting

by pebblesdioneda

Hi there,

My family is scouting for a nice vineyard, grape picking area, winery place to visit in the Niagara area. Can you recommend some? I have two kids 15 and 13 y.o so a place where we can see and pick grapes, then a tour on how they are turned into wine and with some interesting spots/places to go around will be very much appreciated. We're planning to go next week.

Thanks in advance.

There are lost of wineries you can tour and have samples, but I don't think they will let you pick grapes. Even if they did, you'd have to be there at just the right time.

Niagara on the Lake is a very worthwhile town to explore, it's quite close by.

It's been a few years since my last visit, but Inniskillin had a very good winery tour at one point. Grape picking - no that was not an activity that was offered.

Winemaking occurs in the fall, as the grapes ripen, so that is really the only time of year where you can see some form of "activity", but we were there on a weekend, so the operation was not running.

I've been to a few of the other wineries, Kittling Ridge for one, but they had a store and were not doing tours of the facility.

Try http://winesofontario.org/ and check the 'Upcoming Events' calendar (right side). There are many organized events in the summer months.

Pillitteri used to do a tour of the vineyard on a wagon (plus tasting), and some vineyards have an organized hike for a small charge.

Thirty Bench was scenic - not sure about tours here though (quite a few years since I was there).

Jordan Village (Cave Spring) is pleasant to wander around but can be busy.

Ball's Falls Conservation area is lovely and near to the wine route - park, river, historic buildings, etc.

Good luck.

They offer several choice of wine tours; you pick which one is rightfor you; if it were me, I would keep it simple and go with the lunch tour.

Travel Tips for Niagara Falls

Plastic ponchos

by Dabs

Unless you want to have a collection of plastic ponchos, consider being enviornmentally friendly and reuse your plastic ponchos, we got one at the Maid of the Mist and would have gotten two more if we didn't reuse them at Niagara's Fury and Journey Behind the Falls.

Currency Exchange

by tpangelinan

Do you currency exchange as you just go over the bridge, here you know you will get the proper exchange. You will have no problem using US currency in Canada but when you go to the casino you may have a little bit of a problem. But if you are from the USA DO NOT TAKE ANY CANADIAN MONEY HOME, you bank will change you to change your money, my bank wanted to charge me $35.00 for $30.00 Canadian. So now I have another souvener.

Ride the Aero Car

by heitzenrater

So here is scoop about this Aero Car thing. Built in 1916 by Spannish Engineer Leonardo Torres Quevedo, the open air gondola allows for a bird’s eye view of the turbulent Whirlpool rapids and a spectacular view of the Niagara River. You will go right over the rapids. Bring your camera because it is worth the photo's.

Prepare to walk

by Kristin050900

You have to pay for parking everywhere in Niagara Falls and it is not cheap. So your best bet is to walk everywhere that you can. If you sign up for the Great Gorge Adventure Pass, you can get around on a people mover. These take you to all the major attractions of Niagara Falls and thy run about every 15-20 minutes.

Great Local Hangout !

by Fletcho about Flying Saucer Drive-In, The

Get away from the tourist traps and enjoy some of the local flavor of this restaurant. Authentic atmosphere and good food -- our best in Niagara. Waitresses were friendly and even brought our son an extra dessert for free.

In the Lundy Lane section. The haddock, deep fried with fries. It doesn't get any better.
