How to get across the border at night???

by Treeze

Hi!

I'm travelling to Niagara Falls in October with my two aunties.
We're getting the train up from New York, we have to get off the train at the Amtrack Station on the NY side. However, we're staying at a hotel on the Canada side of Niagara!
The train arrives in the evening, when it will be dark, so we're trying to find the best and quickest option to get to our hotel, with our three cases.
Is it easy to get a taxi over?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Yes it is very easy but, it may include a higher than expected cost if there is a long lineup. To me it is worth the extra expense instead of 2 taxi's and hauling your suitcase through buildings and sidewalks especially if it is raining

Why didn't you get the train to the Canada side?

Great, thank you! We were just unsure if crossing the border in a taxi was possible or easy enough to do, but if it is, we'll do that.

We're travelling on a Sunday. When we tried booking the tickets to go straight to the Canada side the train departure times werent convinient. The train ending at the Niagara US side however departed NY exactly the time we needed. We were abit suprise that there was a difference. We presumed it was Sunday service or something?

Thanks again!!

Little known facts about Niagara Falls

by keida84

Hundreds of years ago, the Niagara Escarpment split. The sediment from a vanished Lake Tonawanda formed Goat Island. (after John Stedman whose goat herds froze to death in the winter of 1780) The water flow on the American Falls is much less forceful because of Goat Island. The Canadian Falls have no such obstacle.

In winter, water flows continually, though mist and water creates ice formations along the banks of the Falls. It is known as an "Ice Bridge". Several people were killed attempting to cross the Falls on the ice bridge, thus prompting officials to close the Falls to public access.

Over the years, quite a few, ahem, "Adventursome souls" decided to take on the challenge of the Falls. Annie Taylor, a 46 year-old widow, who taught school in Bay City, Michigan. She decided to go over the falls in a barrel, what? Is she nuts? Well, Mrs. Taylor survived the ordeal but when she was rescued from the barrel, she stated, "nobody ought to ever do that again," and many still try.

Hundreds of thrill seekers have attempted stunts at the Falls since Annie's 1901 attempt, some giving their lives for the privilege. So many idiots, er "thrill seekers" have attempted these feats that a Daredevil Hall of Fame, located in the town of Niagara Falls, Ontario, has been opened in homage to this brand of people. Crazy, lunatic, JPFN: Just Plain %^$#**% Nuts are some words I would use to describe those who attempt the feats. I enjoyed my first visit to Niagara Falls after the Toronto Meeting had disbanded. Lori, Hans and I took a quick trip out to see the Falls before returning to Windsor. Just being with them made this time special and memorable. We went to the casino and I promptly lost my $20 bucks. I rarely win with any form of gamble but it was still fun.

It was still quite warm for that time of year. Oh yes, and the "walk up the hill" in the humidity was also quite memorable!! LOL

Diversity, diversity, and again diversity

Niagara Falls attracts not just tourists, but tourists from all over the world, of all nationalities. You may see sheikhs with numerous wives or daughters (I have seen one), Indian women in their national dresses, African people in colorful clothes, Americans in shorts and in caps .... It is like a small meeting of people from all over the world.

Niagara-on-the-Lake

If you really want to visit a place with a charm, go to Niagara-on-the-Lake. i was there just before Christmas and the main street was groovily lit the shops had all those cool windows and the atmosphere was really more how can i say, more close knit. The waiter at the cafe asked us where are you, from guys? in Toronto noone would ask you that, seeing that noone is from Toronto anyway.I think for the first time i managed to sample some real Canada, it was in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Winter road conditions

by sim1

The road conditions aren't always that good during the winter due to snow and ice rain. on this website :

http://209.82.51.53/guestRC.htm

you can see what the road conditions are per road per region. On the picture you see the map of the south central region on 27th of November.

Green road : Bare & dry
Blue road : Bare & wet
Yellow road : Partially snow covered
White road : snow covered
Purple road : snow packed
Orange road : slushy
Red road : icy
Black/blue road : poor to nil visibility.

The website is constant update during the winter, so you have an up to date view of the road conditions.

Not so punjabi

We had the thali here but nothing was great really! Infact after this experience we decided not to quite spend these kind of monies trying to get an Indian meal. While in US be an American was the thought! :)
