You can visit Niagara Parks' Botanical Gardens. It is located on the scenic Niagara Parkway and the Great Gorge.

I like the Whirlpool State Park. You can hike down the gorge and see the lower rappels close up.

Goat Island is also nice where you get a close up view of the upper rapids around 3 sisters islands and a close up view of the bridal veil fall on the tiny island which makes that fall.

if you are on Canadian side then i will strongly recommend exploring Niagara Glen Nature Area about 5-8 kms north of niagara falls on niagara parkway, just before the botanical gardens.

Its lot of hiking, beautiful picturesque scenes, etc. for details please see my niagara pages at:

Travel Tips for Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls

by RACCOON1

To view Niagara Falls properly you have to drive to Ft. Erie . If you are coming from the USA drive over the bridge to the Canadian side at Ft. Erie. Then drive north along the west side of the Niagara River till you reach the falls.

Re: Maid of the Mist Boat Ride
We have only been on the Maid of the Mist once in our lives. We happened to be walking by the Maid of the Mist entrance around 2:00 pm and noticed that there was no line up . Sheer luck . So we did not let the opportunity pass. The boat ride was worth it.

US vs. Canadian

by Dabs

A question came up recently from someone who was considering just staying on the US side because they didn't have passports. While the US side is nicer with regard to lack of the "cheese" factor, the Canadian side wins out for overall beauty and view of the Falls which is naturally the highlight of Niagara Falls. The US side is a State Park so you don't have the schlock of the Clifton Hill area that you find on the Canadian side, no Ripley's Believe it or Not or amusement park rides or fudge shops or neon lights. Instead the US side focuses on the natural side of the Falls themselves, you can take the Maid of the Mist from the US side for a better look at both of the Falls, walk out onto a viewing platform for a better view of the American Falls, get an up close look at the Horseshoe Falls before the water tumbles over or stand beneath the Bridal Falls at the Cave of the Winds attraction. But you are still looking at the Falls not head on but from the side.

Is it the end of the world if you don't see both sides? Of course not, there is plenty to see on the US side and with the Maid of the Mist boat ride you are seeing the same thing as those from the Canadian side. But if it were me, I'd spring for a passport or passport card and see the view from both sides.

Welland Canal, new and old

by 1Canuck

West of Niagara Falls is the Welland Ship Canal, allowing lake and ocean freighters and pleasure craft to bypass Niagara Falls and the Niagara River in their trek from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario.

The lakes are at different elevations, requiring the use of a series of locks. Lock 3 between the cities of Thorold and St. Catharines has a public viewing area. It is fascinating to watch this engineering marvel at work. Kids and adults alike will be interested in the lock, and the lift bridges. Just south of this lock are the "Flight Locks", a series of 3 double-laned locks. There is no public access here, but driving along side it gives a sense of the height that ships must climb in this one section alone.

Just east is one of the previous ship canals, with now dilapidated locks, built a long time ago for smaller ships. This gives a sense of history to the visitor, and perspective on the changes yet similarities in technology with the passage of time.

In summary, this a definately a worthwhile family outing, away from the usual touristy sites at nearby Niagara Falls.

Salt and sand for the roads

by sim1

In almost every village you'll find these strange buildings. They are for storage of sand and salt that is used in the winter months for the icy roads. There is a lot of snow in this area, so this is no luxury at all.

Go Just to Say You've Been There

by Babzz about Hard Rock Cafe Niagara Falls

The restaurant had really interesting displays and memorabilia from famous rock bands, and they played good music of course, but when it came down to it, the food was just your average pub/family restaurant food at inflated prices. Go for the atmosphere or if you're determined to hit every Hard Rock cafe on the planet, or don't go at all.
