niagara falls via amtrak

by boblynn1649

Hello
I will be coming to Ontario through Niagara Falls by train later this month. My Amtrak ticket is for New York City to Niagara Falls and then I have a ViaRail reservation for Niagara Falls to Grimsby ON. I am wondering if I have to get off the train (I think it is the same train/different crew)to get my ticket and reboard to carry on to Grimsby. I have asked this question of both ViaRail and Amtrak but have not be able talk to anyone with the answers. If anyone has any knowledge of this, I would really appreciate your help.
Thanks so much.

I went from Buffalo NY to Toronto by Amtrak/Via a couple of years ago. When the train stopped at Niagara NY passengers were advised that if they were not crossing the border that they should leave the train now. Then they locked the train doors and the Canadian border officials came round with the immigration/customs cards. They gave us about 10 minutes or so to fill them in and then collected them along with everyone's passport. All-in-all were were there for about an hour (during which time the buffet car was restocked by the Via Rail staff and the crew changed).

BTW You couldn't leave the train and then rejoin it as the doors stayed locked until it was over the border.

I assume it's still the same system these days.

Have a good trip!

Travel Tips for Niagara Falls

Crest of Horseshoe Falls

by CoAir13

Standing at the crest of these falls and being hypnotized by the water. The high mineral content makes the water a pretty shade of blue-green...an amazing sight. If not for the throngs of people, I could sit hit for hours and watch it!

CRAZY FELLOW IN THE PAST

by RafaelTheSecond

He deserves to be my first tip in my Niagara Page!!!! This was Bobby Leach and his barrel after his trip over Niagara Falls, 1911, two years before my Grandma Carmen born. Anyway, I doubt Bobby would do such a thing during the winter, hahahaha

Much before, in 1902 a great woman named Annie Taylor, 63-year-old was the first person to go over the Falls in a barrel; she survived virtually unharmed. Since Taylor's historic ride, 14 other people have intentionally gone over the Falls in or on a device. Some have survived unharmed, but others have drowned or been severely injured. Survivors of such stunts face charges and stiff fines, as it is illegal to attempt to go over the Falls.

Plucking the freshest of Ontario

by Faiza-Ifrah

Everybody knows that Niagara region offers tours to many wineries and vineyards. However, we would like to recommend cherry, apple, strawberry and plum picking in one of the many orchards. It is lot of fun while on a road trip. For information on orchards and farms, one can pick up a Rural Routes brochure at about any Avondale Stroe in Niagara. Avondale stores are variety stores that you can find in many plazas and strip malls in Niagara region.

Here are some things to watch for:

1. Pick an off peak traffic day and time. Peak traffic times will kill all the fun that you can have.

2. Go on the road less travelled and pick a farm that is not crowded.

3. For picking from the trees, ensure that you don't unnecessarily bend any branches for that can break them and destroy a tree and subject you to heavy fine.

4. Always wear rough and dark clothing. Ripened fruite juices and small insects will fall all over your clothes and when you remove them, they get squashed leaving bad patches on the clothes you are wearing.

5. Let the younger lot go for plucking the fruites, while parents rest and gossip.

Road map

Another website that I like very much is this online roadmap :

http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/traveller/map/

With this website you can click on a part of the map of Ontario, and get the roadmap for that area. You can zoom in very good on an area, so it makes the map easy to read. Another option is to go to the index of place-names, and search the map that way. The maps are quite large, so it might take some time to download.

NEAR FALLSVIEW CASINO

by LoriPori about SHOELESS JOE'S

Hans and I met up with Jenny (JennysTravels) and MelsTreks ( Melanie) while we were in Niagara Falls. We met at SHOELESS JOE'S , which was right next to the new Fallsview Casino.
I had the classic Burger ( $9.98 ) and Hans had the Phillies Steak Sandwich ( $11.98 ).
Their Classic Burgers are certified Angus Beef Sirloin Burgers and are served on a poppy and sesame seed egg bun, with lettuce, tomato onion pickle and fries.
Their Phillies Steak Sandwich is thinly shaved beef dipped in au jus and smothered in mixed cheses, sauteed onions and peppers and served on a panini bun with au jus.
For an additonal .98 tiy can add a caesar salad, house salad or soup of the day.
They also offer Sirloin Steak, Ribs, Teriyaki Stir Fry, Fish and Chips, Penne, Fajitas and chicken wings.
