Suggestions for Visiting the U.S. & Canada side of Niagra Falls on the same day

by afamprez

Hello All,

I am planning to visit the Niagra Falls area in August. I am thinking of arriving by train to the Depew, NY station. I need to know the most cost effective and convenient way to visit the US & Canada side of Niagra Falls on the same day (if this is possible)? Is driving a better option? Does it cost anything to cross the border by driving (e.g. toll, etc.)

Thank you so much for your help!

Firstly it depends on what time of day you arrive.

Secondly - why Depew? (Unless you're staying there and intend to make the trip the following day?) If coming from New York then you can get the train to Niagara Falls (US or Can). However if just going for the day it would be best to get off on the US side as the train can take a bit of time for the border checks before it crosses the river.

If taking a day out from Buffalo then the most cost-effective way is to use the local buses. There is a regular service and the journey from downtown takes just under an hour - www.nfta.com

From the US side you can easily walk over the Rainbow Bridge for the best views from Canada. I assume there is a toll for vehicles as there is one for pedestrians coming back through. Whether driving or walking expect quite strict border controls especially returning to the US.

Apart from the falls there's not really much else of interest in the immediate area and so can be done as a day-trip no problems.

Have a good trip!

Depew NY - that's some 40 miles from the Falls (close to an hour by car). Why there?

Crossing the Rainbow Bridge - $3.25 US or $3.50 Cdn each way. On foot you pay $0.50 each way in either currency. There are other bridges too, but it is the one that is closest to the falls (easy walking distance).

In August, you are at the height of tourist season and if you do decide on a car (at least on the Canadian side), you have to drive to off-site parking lots and take a shuttle bus to the falls proper.

All of the "classic" views you see of the Falls are taken from the Canadian side, so you should plan to cross over. You can get quite close to the Falls from Goat Island on the US side. Canadian side you can get close to the Horseshoe (Canadian) falls.

You should also consider taking a boat ride on the Maid of the Mist for a spectacular (but rather damp) close-up view from the bottom of the falls.

Visit Canada - you will need your passport to get back to the USA.

Sorry - the $3.25 / $3.50 is the toll for taking a car over.

Travel Tips for Niagara Falls

Dont miss the falls but keep on going!

by mtstranscribe

You have to, of course, see the falls. One of the most awesome sites in the US, but then keep going 15 minutes up the road and the world changes. From tourist traps, franchise hotels and restaurants, and crowds, crowds, crowds the scenery changes to parks, wineries, bicycle and walking trails, and then into the absolutely gorgeous town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Cobblestone streets, horse and carriages, bed and breakfasts, cafes, and of course the Shaw Festival showcasing wonderful theatre productions all over town! It was so peaceful and enjoyable strolling through the town yet there was lots to do. Not one billboard in site. Amazing! And no McDonald's!!!!!!! See the falls and then stay in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Visit a historical fort, shop for antiques, see a play, and eat at a wonderful cafe. Stay at one of the many spas and get pampered or stroll down the street to one of the lovely little B&Bs. Pictures will be loaded soon! One of the first vacations I have been on where I truly relaxed and enjoyed peace and quiet yet had fun and saw so many new things.

Dufferin Islands

by kris-t

Nice trails invite leisurely walks that wind through the 11 small islands, over many small bridges and lead to wonderful areas where it is possible to view waterfowl and other inhabitants. The Dufferin Islands are an excellent location to enjoy a picnic lunch.

500 m. (0.5 Mile) south of Horseshoe Falls.

Eat Fresh Bio Apples

by galeena1

Due to construction work in the central district , we had to take a side road through some gardens to get to the parking lot. It turned out those are used to grow sweet apple. We had apples for lunch and it was so yummy. If you re there in the apple season dont miss a try.

Incline Railway

by Dabs

After finishing up with Journey Behind the Falls and Niagara's Fury we followed the sign to the Incline Railway which was also included with our Adventure Pass as well as the People Mover Pass. There was no wait to get up so we flashed our People Mover Pass and got on for the short ride up the incline. Once up there, take a walk along the walkway towards town for a different view of the Falls.

Look for the UFO

by feline01 about Flying Saucer

We ate here daily because my husband loved the food. It is very similar to New Jersey diner food, good food with huge portions. The restaurant can't be missed, it's the only UFO that I saw on Lundy Lane. Good coffee (a must!)
Breakfast items
Texas Toast (huge slabs of toast)
