I am considering bring a motorcoach tour group to Niagara Falls the 3rd week in April of 2008. I have been to the Niagara Falls area in the Winter and the Fall but never in the early Spring. Is April too early to see any flowers in bloom? Is it too cold for the Maid of the MIst or Journey Behind the Falls? Thank you for your help!

April would be too early for there to be many flowers; perhaps some spring blooms. Early/mid-May is 'official' for planting, which should be after the last frost, but with global warming who knows when this might be! (Ottawa is the place to see massive spring plantings).

The Maid of the Mist sites indicate April is subject to ice conditions in the river; if it's a mild winter this wouldn't be a problem - it seems it's a 'wait and see' situation. May mainly appears to be the official start to the season, but if you check out 'Maid of Mist' on Google I'm sure you'll find plenty of info. re. the boats and also info. for visiting behind the Falls.

(I've been skiing in April in past years, and also have been sunbathing!)

Can only give examples of April 2007 and it was way too cold for flowers and Maid of the Mist was weeks away - see my pages for examples of ice at Niagara in April 2007 brrrgggghhh.

Journey behind the falls was open during this cold spell. Some of the views were obscured by ice walls and the lowest viewing platform was not accessible. Still worth it though and because the platform was closed we could not get wet!

By the law of averages the chances are it will be a warmer April in 2008, good luck.

by mid-May, the Hamilton botanical Gardens are in full swing, and that's quite close to Niagara, so you may want to consider waiting about 4 weeks. Then you can get the best of everything.

Travel Tips for Niagara Falls

Rainbow Bridge

by kris-t

The Rainbow Bridge is an international steel arch bridge across the Niagara River gorge.
The brige has interesting history.

It was built near the site of the earlier Honeymoon Bridge, which had collapsed on January 27, 1938. Construction began in May of 1940. The bridge was officially opened on November 01, 1941.
The deck of this bridge is 202 feet (61.5m) above the water and 950 feet (289.5m) in length.
Canadian side of the Rainbow Bridge features the Rainbow Tower, which houses a large carillon ( musical instrument usually housed in the bell towers of church towers) that sounds several times daily.

Rainbow Bridge provides a pedestrian walkway across the bridge.
The current fare for crossing is $.50 for pedestrians and bicyclists (each way).
$3.25 U.S. funds & $4.00 Canadian funds for autos (round trip). The coin machine collects the toll and accepts both Canadian and American coins.

There is no toll to pay when crossing into Canada King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, during their 1939 Royal Tour of Canada, dedicated the site of the Rainbow Bridge; a monument was erected to commemorate this occasion (see photo)

The Falls at Night! 2

by tpangelinan about Niagara Falls at Night light show

Here is another shot of the falls at night and the diferent colors. This is a must see for anyone visiting Niagara Falls on the Canadian or USA sides. Make sure you bring lots of batteries for this night out. There are plenty of areas to get a good view even a few bars to sit at a grab a drink and enjoy the show.

Don't eat overpriced food!

by dtownkitty about Tony's

There are many mediocre restaurants in Niagara Falls that charge way too much for a poor excuse for a meal. Tony's is not one of them. Here you can get a good sized plate of tortellini served with rolls and salad for a good price. And it will taste good! It's homestyle food in a homey atmosphere. The service was very friendly and they offered me some tips when they overheard me discussing vacation plans. The owner/ manager was very friendly as well. Another thing worth mentioning is that they have a small outdoor dining area.
