Niagar on the Lake Lighthouse
by tpangelinan
This cute little lighthouse was built in 1903 marking the entrance to the Niagara river from Lake Ontario. It stands only 45 feet tall and has a red/orange light on top, it's sister lighthouse is located down stream at the entrance of Lake Erie at Fort Erie and is 15 feet shorter than this one. Both lighthouses are still used to this day for shipping navigational aids. They each have a water sampling lab that tests the water quality and toxins of the Niagara River since about 1975 and a full lab was installed in 1988, the sister lighthouse had been testing since 1983.
The best way to get around NotL
by Jefie
Biking is definitely the best way to get around Niagara-on-the-Lake. You can get a map of the downtown area and go from one historic place to the next, and there is also a nice trail that starts in NotL and goes along the Niagara Parkway all the way to Niagara Falls. Beautiful! Bring your bike or rent one at Zoom Leisure
Fort George
by tpangelinan
Go check out Fort George if you are into old forts and history. You can experience the life of a soldier back in 1812 with the daily reinactments, the War of 1812 was fought here where a band of Canadians from all types of back ground banded together to defeat the many invations of the American troups. At one point the Americans did defeat the fort and occupided it for a few months but could never get any more ground and lost again but not before distroying the fort and the town before retreating across the river, then the British defeated Fort Niagara and held it for some time. Like I said lots of interesting history here so go check it out for more info!
Full of Tourists but Yet Peaceful and Relaxing
by CdnJane
There's just something about Niagara on the Lake that draws me back time after time, and makes me be compelled to take friends there when they come to Ontario for a visit. Even just to go down for an afternoon is delightful.
I don't have any pictures handy of NoTL, but am taking Sharon (VT's Tasmania) down to Niagara Falls while she visits, and we will be stopping here for a walk... and some pictures. Soooo Please Stand By for an update
