If your budget won't quite cover a stay at the Chateau Laurier, a good alternative is to stay at a Bed and Breakfast. There are quite a few in Ottawa and the surrounding area, with a wide range of prices. Most seem to be of a fairly high standard and are generally in quieter locations than the hotels. It also gives you the opportunity to meet local residents who can offer some great advice. If the one you choose is in the downtown area, make sure you ask about parking -- especially in the winter, when it can be a real problem.
