In the summer of 2012, I brought a group of students from my university to Ottawa for a study abroad experience. We stayed for three nights in dorm rooms at Carleton University. The rooms were modern, clean, and convenient. (Also inexpensive, as you would expect.) We also purchased breakfast privileges in a nearby cafeteria. The breakfast provided was excellent - good selection of freshly prepared foods, along with plenty of fruits and bakery goods. Carleton University stays busy over the summer, and there are both individuals and groups who take advantage of the rooms available here. When we were staying, the largest group consisted of young men and women who were doing a training unit as members of one of the Army guard units.
Carleton University is within the city limits of Ottawa, but it is a few miles out of the city center. This means that it is not really walkable to tourist attractions. There are some public transportation options available, however.
