visiting Ottawa - please help
by realty
In mid-May my wife and I will spend one week visiting Ottawa and area. We'll be commuting by car from Cobden,
approx. one hour North of Ottawa. Could you please suggest:
* MUST NOT MISS (attractions, things to do, etc..)
* Nice to see/do if there is time
* Places to visit within 1 hour from Ottawa
* Good-Value restaurants & typical dishes to try
* Where to stay (hotels, B&B's, etc..)
I'm asking a lot. Thank you in advance.

I'm not an Ottawa expert by any means, but I loved the town when I was there.
Must not miss: the parliament building (beautiful grounds), Byward Market, the canal, the Chateau Laurier. Just walk around Downtown a bit. It's a really, really interesting little city with a lot going on, especially in the summer.
Not sure about value restaurants, but shwarma is cheap and, for whatever reason, it's everywhere.

Yes, the parliment building has a free tour which is nice. Also the boat ride on the river is fun.
For a tasty restraunt, try Havali.

Let's see:
1. Parliament Hill has already been mentioned. Changing of the Guard doesn't start until June, so you will be too early for that. Strolling along the base of Parliament Hill, along the Ottawa River is nice.
2. Museum of Civilization (in Gatineau) - should be high on everybody's hit list.
3. National Gallery of Canada - also worth the visit,
4. Tulip Festival will be on - Dow's Lake area and just strolling down along the Canal is nice.
5. Walking around - Byward Market (lots of places to eat there) and Sparks Street.
6. Other key museums include the Museum of Nature, Museum of Science and Technology, Experimental Farm and Aviation Museum.
5. Perhaps just outside of your 1-hour driving time from Ottawa, is Upper Canada Village, at Morrisburg,

I did a canal boat tour with Paul's boat cruises. The tour guide is hilarious and very knowledgeable of the canal and the area: http://www.paulsboatcruises.com/.
Also check out the By-ward Market (sorry if it's been said, I didn't read the previous replies).

Certainly seems that you're question has been answered...suggest you take a look around here to give you more detailed information...
Just a thought...an hour South of here..access from Bank Street....it turns into Highway 31....takes you in a straight line to the St. Lawrence River...and all of the Parks that line the Canadian side of the river from Morrisburg all the way to Cornwall...includes Upper Canada Village,a collection of heritage structures salvaged from towns that were submerged [ obliterated ] when they created the St.Lawrence Seaway..There's a Bird sanctuary where thousands of Canadian Geese are fed on they're migratory flight back North..although May might be the tail end of the ritual...
Enjoy your time here...Happy Trails!
Travel Tips for Ottawa
private parking
by Martman
This is a market economy and I guess people will do anything to make a buck. I remember driving in the subarbs. There was a sporting event nearby and hence a huge demand for parking. We noticed people in their private homes were selling their own driveways as temporary parking spaces. I do not know if I should call this an advantage or disadvantage, but either way, advising you! I found it quite amusing seeing the signs advertising the parking outside the private homes!

Winter in Ottawa
by duanestorey
Even though Ottawa is the second coldest captial in the world, the winter really isn't that bad here.. People just dress a little warmer, cuddle up a little closer, and head off to the bars whenever they are lonely.. You can't do much outside in the winter, but you can definitely make up for it in nightclubs, restaurants and bars.. There is so much to do in Ottawa in the WInter.. the Rideau Canal freezes over, and turns into the world's longest (11km) skating ring, complete with vendors.. Around February, Ottawa has the big Winterlude event, which is a week of ice sculptures and special outdoor parties..
Make the most of the winter
by duanestorey
I've talked to many people who have been to Ottawa in the winter, and have had nothing but bad things to say about it, mainly because of the weather. Yes, it's *very* cold in the capital in the winter. Winter in Ottawa lasts between four and five months, and it won't be above 0C that entire time. But if you just look at it with a good attitude, dress warmly, and go play in the snow from time to time, you'll have an awesome experience! Watching my friend Rob jump from the roof of a building, land in a pile of snow, and make drunken snow angels..
