    Affordable but big and relaxing

    by

We were very impressed by this hotel. It included 2 bedrooms, a fridge, microwave, free high-speed internet and continental breakfast for a very good price. Location was also great, very close to Rideau canal and minutes drive to the Parliament hill.

The only thing it lacked was an indoor pool, but at that price, it's too much to ask for!

Rideau Canal Question?

by sbalax

We will be in Ottawa the first week in September for WARR (World Airline Road Race). The 5 and 10K courses run along the Rideau Canal on the Queen Elizabeth Parkway (?). Is this a relatively flat course?
Any help on that would be appreciated and also suggestions for places to eat near the host hotel, the Crowne Plaza. There will be several thousand airline people from all around the world in town from about the 3rd to the 7th. Watch out, they are real "party animals"!

It is pretty flat... The entire town is relatively flat and the run along the canal is definitly flat! ;)

Heh Frank....as mentioned already the course will be flat...as far as places to eat close by it depends on what you're interested in...Within a ten to fifteen dollar cab ride you can pretty much find whatever your heart desires...Tex Mex,Asian [Vietnamese,Chinese,Japanese],Fish, Vegetarian,Steak house...depends on your preferences...
Have fun while youre here..!!

yep, it's a beautiful job too!

Places to eat? Just get in a cab and ask to go to the Byward Market or Elgin Street. Seeing as you're there to jog, it's not too far from the hotel, and it'll be a nice walk too (these areas are also the party spots)

Travel Tips for Ottawa

Notre Dame Cathedral

by jamiesno

For those that like touring cathedrals, the Canadian Capital won't disappoint with the Notre Dame Cathedral. Here is a picture I took and some information I found for you :-)

In 1978, both the National Capital Commission and the City of Ottawa officially recognized the Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica of Ottawa as an historic monument. The cathedral is indeed the oldest surviving church in Ottawa. It stands on the site that was occupied by the first Catholic chapel open to both anglophones and francophones of Bytown.

The first plan dates from 1839. The work on the building's structure was conducted between 1841 and 1865, and the interior ornamentation, from 1876 to 1885. Missionnaries on temporary postings initiated the actual construction. It was only after the arrival of the Oblate Fathers in 1844 that the work proceeded on a regular basis.

In 1847, the poor mission church was prematurely transformed into a cathedral, the seat of the first Bishop of Bytown, Most Reverend Joseph-Eugène-Bruno Guigues, O.M.I. With the growth of the diocese under the second Bishop of Ottawa, Most Reverend Thomas Duhamel, and with the impetus of a visionary artist, Canon Georges Bouillon, the cathedral was finally completed in 1885. Dedicated to the Immaculate Conception in 1853, Notre Dame Cathedral was elevated to the status of basilica in 1879.

In 1999, the Cathedral underwent a major restoration. This was the first phase of a multi-year project.

visit Parliament Hill! I...

by sherry_c

visit Parliament Hill! I recommend taking a tour through the buildings, and you definately cannot miss the changing of the guard which happens at 8:00 every morning. (I think) The show lasts for approximately one hour. Don't forget your camera! My family and I were walking around downtown Ottawa when, while waiting for a light to turn, a tour bus drove past that looked like a boat! When we went to the travel information center, we discovered that the tour is an hour and a half long, 45 minutes on land and 45 minute on water, covering ALL of Ottawa's best assets. We thought this was ingenious!

Parliament Hill & Ottawa River

by sunnywong

The main Parliament building in Ottawa, the capital of Canada. The Ottawa river is in the foreground with tourist boat. Rideau Canal lock system on the left-hand side of photo controls the flow through the man made canal. In winter the canal forms the longest skating path in the world.

Photography opportunities

by victorwkf

Ottawa is a city with plenty of photography opportunities. Firstly, there are many historical buildings where you are take interior and exterior photographs. Secondly, there are opportunities for night photography because the major attractions are lighted, especially near to Christmas time. Thirdly, the city itself has many picturesque locations such as the Ottawa River, Parliament Hill, several parks etc. Personally, I took many photographs of Ottawa using my digital camera when I was there in November 2005.
