Travel Tips for Owen Sound
At first I thought this was another of those impressive Great Lakes grain elevators that you see dotting the Lake Huron shore.
But a VTer who lives in Owen Sound informed me that this is actually a storage system for powdered cement.

Grey Roots Visitor Centre & Museum
There is an exhibit on the underground railway discussing the history of Black people who escaped slavery to come here to settle. Also, there is a fabulous area for kids with circus activities for amusement....get a chance to play with the diablo! South of Owen Sound off highway 6 at Inglis falls.
Georgian Bay shore Owen Sound to Wasaga
I live within a two hour drive of this area of Ontario. We could drive north to the Muskokas in the same amount of time, but find Up North to be crowded in early autumn. And the return weekend traffic can be a nightmare.
This is when I traditionally take the family for a weekend trip to Collingwood, or Thornbury or Owen Sound. The views of the Beaver Valley and sparkling Georgian Bay are quite spectacular if not as 'rocky, windswept and northern' as Up North.
The towns are not as touristy, and the nightlife is a bit 'small town' rowdy, except near Collingwood/Wasaga which are ski resort towns in the wintertime.
By late September it is possible to pick apples at a pick-your-own orchard. We often do this in Glen Huron with a stop at the antique stores in Stayner.
The fall season is longer here than Up North, and on a sunny day, a very pleasant hike may be had at Devil's Glen even into late October.
I recommend booking accomodation in one of the small towns nearer to Owen Sound and using a B&B as a base for exploring the area.
