Travel Tips for Sioux Lookout
Prepare for EVERYTHING
by babybird
Even if you are going to Sioux Lookout in the summer, it is a very good idea to bring both a swimsuit AND cold-weather gear. It can often become hot during the day, but generally cools down quite noticably at night.
We usually brought lightweight raincoats
as there is frequently good fishing during light drizzle.
You will want some sturdy shoes as most of the shorelines are pretty rugged and often have mossy rocky outcroppings. Most groceries and supplies are available in the town of Sioux Lookout, but you might feel better if you are already stocked up before you arrive. If boating, make sure your first aid kit is updated before you leave. I would not go anywhere without a camera. I've seen and filmed/photographed everything from Osprey nests to bears and deer along the shorelines. It would be a good idea if visiting from the U.S. or another country to make sure you have an updated list of what is permitted to bring in or out of Canada. This will save you time and trouble at the border customs office, especially if traveling in by car. As I recall, you will need a current driver's license
or ID and your birth certificate for every passenger. (Children need a birth certificate) If boating, make sure you have ample tools such as spark plug wrenches
and spare plugs/parts. You may need to repair an outboard yourself if you should run into trouble and are miles from help.

Sioux Lookout is located on the English River system, which is a continuous chain of lakes in Ontario. It is possible to go for nearly hundreds of miles by water, provided you know your way around or have an adequate guide. Fishing is excellent and there are well-equipped camps all over the area which fiercely compete to earn your weekly rental. Cabins usually include indoor plumbing, heat (when needed), linens, silverware and all the basics. All you really need to bring are your groceries (available in town) and personal choices for fishing gear. Most camps have package deals on boat rentals for extra fees. Prices are highly competitive and service is mostly good. In American dollar terms, it's a fairly inexpensive stay, considering all you get.
Walleye fishing is generally excellent and there are many other types of fish to try for as well. The lakes boast some spectacular sunsets and there is much to see in the way of wildlife. If you like fishing and nature, but prefer a few nightly creature comforts, you may wish to give one of the camps near Sioux Lookout a try. I've been there about 7 times and have loved every moment of each visit.
Our camp of choice has always been the family-owned Frog Rapids Camp. It features comfortable housekeeping-type cabins and a
complete boat outfitting package, but there are plenty of other good reputable camps near the Sioux Lookout region from which to choose.
