There are 33 lakes in the immediate area. Several in the heart of the city. Lake Ramsey has beaches, a yacht club and a cruise boat called the 'CORTINA'
Lake Ramsey is the largest City contained lake in North America.
We went North about 40 miles to PANACHE COUNTRY at WHITEFISH ONT.( 9 miles off highway 17 the TransCanada highway) turn at highway 549. My daughter's boyfriend had his boat stored here at the Marina. Half of the Lake is an Indian Reservation. There are several islands on the lake and it is huge. Most cottages have no electricity or roads to reach them . All is done by boat or in the winter across the ice.
Medal-Winning Sudbury!

Put in your Five Cents Worth in Sudbury - pay a visit to the underground mine museum, and be sure to stop and snap at the World's Largest Nickel!
George VI never looked so good!
"Dynamic Earth" is the name of the facility with the Nickel Mine, as well as an interpretative center where you can learn about the peculiar geology of the Sudbury region. Watch for the signs - it's just off Route 17.
"Watch your head!"
Not for claustrophics! But the underground tour at Dynamic Earth is fascinating, and well worth the admission.
Myself, I'm not the most comfortable person when I'm underground - I have mild claustrophia - but I figured that if little children don't mind, then I shouldn't either.
I was on a guided tour with about 15 other people, ranging in age from 10 to 70. We were all provided with our own miner's helmets, certainly adding to the experience. Inga, our guide, was perfect! Personable, amusing, and informative.

Science North, Sudbury

"waterfall at Science North"
I love waterfalls... even artificial ones like this. When you come through one of the passageways in Science North, you will find a fountain that is above you. That doesn't stop people from throwing coins in... and it leads to this little waterfall. I took a close up, since I liked seeing the autumn leaves through the water.
"LIVE butterfly gallery"
The second floor of Science North has a live butterfly gallery. If you click on the photo, you will see black butterflies in the bush. They also had a climate controlled case of butterflies still in their cocoons. We weren't fortunate enough to see one emerge... but one can still hope!
"Butterflies at feeding station"
It was fascinating watching butterflies going after their nectar...
"Butterfly on leaf"
"butterfly on leaf 2"
"Playing a mining core sample glockespiel"
This instrument had the nicest sound... although they had it backwards - the high notes are supposed to go to the right of you, not the left. This was on the 3rd floor.
As much as I liked the 3rd floor (biosphere), the 4th floor had the movies, space, sound and body exhibits. There was even a bed of nails! (I didn't try it, but my friend did)
"Turtles at Science North"
The 'bluecoats' of Science North must have positioned the turtles this way since when I came back an hour later, they were in the same position!
"Lake Ramsey from Science North"
See the blackened rock off to the right? Otherwise, Lake Ramsey is quite pretty, and they have boat tours on the lake in the summer. Laurentian University has its campus between this lake and another one, and the hospital is nearby as well.
