How can I find someone who wants their car/RV to be driven to Vancouver this summer?!
by CanadianInEngland
We live in the UK, and we've booked flights to fly into Toronto so we can drive our 3 teenage daughters to Vancouver this summer and fly back from there, visiting relatives and friends on the way. I'm now looking into car/RV rental... and the dropoff charges are RIDICULOUS! Is there some way to find someone who might be interested in having their car/RV driven to Vancouver - eg they either want to move there or they want to drive one way on the return trip? Any other thoughts? Thanks very much! :-)

Just curious. How many miles T to V. When (date spacific) do you plan to arrive in V. If you rent Suburban (large suv) how much per day, mpg, free miles etc. etc , etc.

You used to be able to do this through rental companies i.e. they would have a car that was rented from Vancouver to Toronto and then they were looking for someone to drive it back to its 'home port'. Don't know if they do this anymore - two disadvantages: a. you can't rally count on availability very much before travelling date, and b. you are only given so long to get the car back; perhaps four or five days, so you couldn't linger and dilly-dally. It still might be worth having a search through Google.

Thanks for getting back to me :-)
@juliogg - We're leaving toronto 18th july, arriving vancouver ~4th august. The distance is 4400 kms... plus a couple of sidetrips - say 5,500 kms. Rental, including tax & mileage, is appoximately $3300 - and quotes for the dropoff alone are $2,000 (!!)
@hawkhead - Great idea... I'll take a look - but you're also right - I wouldn't be able to keep things to the last minute!
I'm open to all suggestions - I know there's a way to save money somehow!

I think the most fun thing to...
by LeighAnne
I think the most fun thing to do in Toronto on a Saturday is to walk down Spadina Avenue where it is open to markets of fresh food and produce, clothing and jewlrey... The fun part is negotiating the price and stopping for a bite to eat. My fondest memory is when I lived there. July 1st is a huge celebration at Ontario Place which is an amusement park, boating spot, restaurants, etc.. surrounded on lake ontario. They have the fireworks contects during that time against other countries. Its called 'Fire of Lights'.
To get there... take the streetcar from Queen's Quay West to Exhibition Place and just walk thru the park. Its best to go in the day and spend the whole day and evening there. There is also an outside amphitheatre which is always being used in the summer for concerts and stand up comedy.

Black Creek Pioneer Village
by kris-t
Black Creek Pioneer Village is an historic site in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, just west of York University and southeast of the Jane and Steeles intersection. It overlooks the Black Creek (Toronto). The village is a recreation of life in 19th Century Ontario and gives an idea how Toronto might have looked in the early 1800s.
Not the Ollie North Shuffle ;-)

Danforth Avenue, in the area called Greektown, is host each April to a Contra Dance Festival called Spring Thaw. The immediate question, of course is "what is contra dancing?". To many the first image is that of the dance performed by Oliver North in front of the Iran-Contra Senate investigating committee...actually not bad but no relationship to this event.
Actually, contra dancing is somewhat difficult to define...so much so that a web page, What Is Contra Dance?, has been created to try. The best definition seems to be the first of six attempts which says, "The only real answer to the question 'What is contra dance?' comes when you try it." For sure it's great fun for very nearly everyone except the terminally "up-tight".
You will always find live music, lots of sweaty people of all ages and all political, cultural and social persuasions. You don't need a partner, don't have to know how to dance.....as every dance is explained on the spot by a caller and mistakes are just part of the fun.
The Toronto Spring Thaw is held at Eastminster United Church at 310 Danforth Avenue (East of Broadview Ave, West of Pape Ave.). Check out the website below.
The blurry photos here were the best my camera could do capturing the fast paced action.
