    So many years ago, splurged for my one night stopover en-route to Montreal. YVR to YYZ by Canadian the CNN or CPR to Place Bonaventure The Royal York is a Toronto must stopover, even for a cuppa in the late afternoon It was part of the CPR to have a hotel across the road from the Union Station, so travel across Canda, and the oxidised copper roofs and similar masonary landmarks will tell you who developed the Hotel or where the station is.

    An imposing building, lots of wood and leather, contrasted by the then brand new Royal Bank glass edifice, kippers and poached eggs for breakfast an expensive but worthwhile and memorable stopover. must try to get a bargain weekened again Rocky H. Aok's. Benihana Restaurant was already there

    The Royal York has been in business since 1929, and was built by the Canadian Pacific Railway company as the largest hotel in the Commonwealth (Union Station had been inaugurated by the Prince of Wales two years earlier). The site, however, had been used for various hotels of much smaller proportions since 1853. It has 28 floors and the original plan contained 1048 rooms - although there was a massive ($100 million) renovation conducted between 1988 and 1993, which may have altered that number. The hotel has, essentially, any service you might ever need, from hairdressing to catering to gift shops, laundries and fitness facilities. It doesn't come cheap, though - the best available rate for a single person per night in late August is CAD270.

    The Fairmont Royal York is one of those hotels that could probably be put into either the accomodation or the things to do category. This is one of the most famous hotels in Canada and has a long history. Organizations that want to impress visitors or conference participants will put up guests here or throw banquets in one of the many banquet rooms. If you stay here you can certainly say that you have had a unique Toronto experience.

    The Fairmont Royal York Hotel is one of the most historic and to many most glamourous hotels in Toronto. The hotel was originally built in 1929 by Canadian Pacific Railroads. Like the other hotels that were built by CPR and subsequently bought by Fairmont, this is a massive hotel with more than 1,000 rooms. The hotel itself as you see it from harbour (where I took the exterior photograph) is quite eyecatching. Apparently when it was built back in 1929, this was the tallest building in Canada. Off course it is now dwarfed by the nearby skyscrapers but still has an appealing back drop with the other massive towers behind it. The interior of the hotel features a superlative main lobby which is designed to look like a Romanesque castle. The service is said to be excellent and there are five restaurants and four bars here to entertain you. I have never spent the night here but I have visited friends staying here which is where I have my one complaint about the hotel, the rooms are a bit small for my liking. They are well decorated but still I need some walking room. The Fairmont Royal York is very popular with tour groups, especially those from Asia who seem to love the old world feel of the place.
