Student Simple - Shabby Sheik
Staying for a few days @ Neil Wycik was pretty worthwhile... some of the amenities were good including the fact that there were few other guests staying... so the two bathrooms in my hallways section were almost always free. I had a tiny dorm room to myself, it was nice and quiet.
As for cleanliness, it was just ok... my room was pretty dusty considering how simple it was, the bathroom could have been a little less grimey. The "towels" that are provided are nothing more than old bar towels, so I was glad to have brought my own.
One thing I have to mention, and it was really prevalent throughout the hotel, was this rotten egg smell coming through the vents. They have to do something about this. There is a lounge room on the 22nd floor and sitting in a particular spot it just slaps you in the face. This location is the only place you can internet in the whole building, and that was really not cool!!!! There was no reason for there not to be any internet connection in the rooms.. and it was frustrating to have to come to this dingy penthouse to get my emails done.
Location was amazing though.. just about 5 blocks to the Eaton Center and all the downtown stuff was totally within reach. To take a cab from just about anywhere I needed was an easy $7. Breakfast included was nothing more than a bowl full of cereal (already poured for you!) and some fruits and muffins and stuff.. the fruit was good. There is a 24-hour Metro grocery store two blocks away which was totally key; the selection was amazing and getting a late-nite bite in was totally easy. They wouldn't even let me use their in-house gym bc i didn't live there and "that was policy". I thought that was lame!!
So visiting Neil Wycik was like visiting your granma's place when you were a kid.... it's musty and you kinda don't want to be spending any more time there than you have to, but you buck up and try to take it for what it is : somewhere to spend some time, get some stuff done in the neighbourhood, keep on moving. Wouldn't stay here again considering all the other options, will try out somewhere new if there's a next time, but wouldn't poop on the Neil-Wycik for those with less discriminating attitudes towards this simple student living :)
Unique Quality: Location!
