Catholic conventions
by karenakaangel
I heard there was a catholic convention in toronto in jan 2008. I wanted some information on it if possible. Thank-you. Karen Alexander

Can you give us a hint as to what this convention was about?

I checked the website for the Archdiocese of Toronto (http://www.archtoronto.org/) but didn't see anything about a big convention there in January 08. They're publicizing an international Eucharistic Congress for June 2008, but that's going to be in Quebec City.
You could try emailing the archdiocese -- there's contact information on their website.

Quoted: "The archdiocese of Toronto will be spiritual host for what could be the largest gathering of Catholic media ever held in Canada when the Catholic Media Convention 2008 comes to town May 28-30.
Some 400 Catholic journalists, communications professionals, TV and radio producers and others from Canada and the United States will meet at the Sheraton Toronto Downtown Hotel for three days of dialogue and professional development. Their theme is “Proclaim it from the rooftops.”"

Hope that answers your question.

Put on your walking shoes and just walk or take the subway. Grab a local map from any hotel and pick your areas of interest. I like mingling with people so I go to Kensington Market, St. Lawrence Market, walk down Queen Street West and of course Yonge Street. Winter is not a good time to visit too cold and damp. East access to the different restaurants of the world
A True Toronto Landmark!

In front of the Sandra Ainsley Gallery (the most fabulous glass art gallery I have ever seen) in the Distillery District stands this millstone. The plaque reads:
"This millstone brought from England on the schooner 'Kingston' to the Town of York 1832 was used for grinding grain in the historic windmill of Gooderham & Worts. The windmill stood 52 feet southwest by south of this point. It was the eastern limit of the famous 'Old Windmill Line' on which the original plan of the City of Toronto was based."

Apart from walking a lot around I really liked the view from the small islands! You can get on the Toronto Islands by a little ferry! This picture was taken from Ontario Place. There was an amusement park but it was closed in April!
Conversions

Canadians measure temperatures with Celcius, the money is also based on a dollar (called a loonie, for the pic of a loon on the coin) however the conversion rate is different than the U.S. It took us awhile, but Katmo and I figured out this formula: If you paid $89 Canadian for your hotel room, you should wear a light jacket.

It seems to be almost impossible to find a liquor store in Toronto. I guess they don't want people to drink. Seems you can find liquor only in the clubs and restaurants, appropriately priced.
Prices just like in US, except the exchange rate is about $1.40 canadian for $1 US so its like getting a 40% discount all the time...COOL
