Cycling on Windsor's Bike Paths
by windsorgirl
In the spring, summer and fall, I love to ride my bike. Although Windsor's streets are not very accomodating for cyclists, we do have quite a few off road bike paths that are a pleasure to ride.
Some of them are the Ganatchio Trail along Riverside Drive in East Windsor, the waterfront trail in downtown Windsor, and the LaSalle Trail. My personal favourite is an unnamed trail that begins in South Windsor and follows the Turkey Creek for a few kms before heading northwest to Malden Park. At Malden Park there is a very large hill (for that cardio workout and a view of the Detroit skyline) as well as many trails throughout the park.
LANCASTER BOMBER
by LoriPori
Located in Windsor's Jackson Park and on display since 1961, the LANCASTER BOMBER is in honour of the 556 airforce servicemen and women from Windsor who perished in World War II.
Known as the "Queen of The Heavy Bombers" , it was built in Malton, Ontario in July 1945 and powered by four Rolls Royce Merlin Engines. The Avro Lancaster FM212 is one of 17 that survived from the 7,737 built.
Its crew usually consisted of the Pilot -- Flight Engineer -- Nose Gunner -- Navigator -- Wireless Operator -- Tail Gunner -- Mid-upper Gunner. Update on the Lancaster
Thursday, May 27, 2005
Today, the "Lancaster" came down from its perch. Just before 10:15 a.m. two giant cranes slowly lifted the 60-year old plane off its 4.85 meter pillar and gently touched down the 15,000 kilogram plane.
Previous inspections showed exposure to the elements had deteriorated the vintage aircraft so it was decided it needed to be in a climate-controlled indoor location.
The plan is to evntually have the plane on display in a museum.
INTERNATIONAL DRAGON BOATS
by LoriPori
Over 2200 paddlers came to Sand Point Beach in Windsor July 13 - 15, 2007, to participate in the INTERNATIONAL DRAGON BOATS for the cure of breast cancer. Some came as far away as Los Angeles, New Orleans, Montreal and Toronto.
So, Saturday, 13 teams of "Survivors" navigated their teams of 20 paddlers, one drummer and a steer person, along the Detroit River at Sand Point Beach. Sunday 80 more corporate teams took to the water to participate in the fund raiser.
The races are now in its fifth year. Last year's event raised $247,000 and organizers hoped to raise more than $300,000 this year.
Some names for teams include: Bosom Buddies, Breast of Friends, Wonder Broads, Rowbust and Twin Peaks.

Fort Malden of Amherstburg
by kris-t
The first post, known as Fort Amherstburg, was constructed in 1796 near the mouth of the Detroit River where it empties into Lake Erie. This post was the headquarters for the British forces in southwestern Upper Canada during the War of 1812. Fort Malden was erected after the war and rebuilt in 1838-40 and served once again as a centre for the British defence during the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837-39.
Today the 4.5 hectare site includes remains of the 1840-period earthworks and four buildings, including a restored and furnished 1819 brick barracks. An orientation centre and interpretation centre with exhibits will help you to discover the fascinating history of this outpost of the British Empire
