Le Chateau Frontenac: Brilliant Castle

I can only say this, this hotel is by far the best stay I've ever had. I'm not saying this because they upgraded my room for free as well. The staff was classy, helpful and top notch in every form. I am not a suit-and-tie type of patron, I'm simply into castles by which this beautiful hotel did not disappoint.

I highly recommend a stay at this beautiful castle/hotel upon every regard. The employees conveyed to me that this is the "best" hotel in Quebec and they were more than proud to work there and it showed; trust me.

I will always behold fond memories of Le Chateau Frontenac.

Montreal Hilton: Hilton Bonaventure

Our stay at the Hilton was superb! The concierge was super helpful and the breakfast in the Executive Club is still with me! Thinking about the chocolate filled croissants still make my mouth water.

Rooftop Garden, Fish ponds and Swimming pool! Access to the Underground without leaving the building.

W - Montreal: The W

Well, in Quebec, the letter W doesn't always get the respect it deserves, with the majority of Quebec citizens disagreeing with President George W. Bush, however in Montreal, the W is welcomed.

W hotels definitely cater to a niche market of high end business travelers, who also like to enjoy very overpriced drinks and food in a swanky techno induced frenzy.

During two recent trips to Montreal, we stayed in the W, which for all intents and purposes is a wonderful hotel. My only real issue with it is how expensive this wonderful hotel is. Rack rate for the room I stayed in was 559 dollars, and came with much of the same stuff you would expect, a bed, a shower (which did not have a door), pillows, a toilet, and a mini bar. It was comfortable, spacious, and had some peaceful jazz playing. Water was a whopping $8 a bottle, and a bag of peanuts were $12!

This was however the most comfortable bed I have slept on in some time, so if you are able to find a great rate, I would stay here at least once in your life! The hotel was well within walking distance of alot of main attractions in Montreal, although in the middle of winter, I would recommend taking a taxi, or the metro system, as it was quite chilly in December!

The facility did have a gym, which was located on the bottom floor, and had free weights, treadmills and elliptical machines.

Quality Suites: A nice port in a Storm!

Our most recent trip to the Province of Quebec took place in October, 2006 when we had to drive from New Brunswick to Ottawa, Ontario to attend a wedding. We were late getting underway for this 10-hour drive and lost our sunshine as we hit a heavy rainstorm while passing Quebec City. We kept going for another hour before we decided to call it quits in the rain as darkness began to fall, pulling off into the small city of Drummondville to look for accommodations. The signs only showed two possible motels and the first one we saw was the Quality Suites. The building looked quite impressive, more ornate than the usual North American 'highway style' accommodations, but I decided to enquire as to availability and price anyway. I was surprised to hear a two bedroom suite would only cost C$127 (US$110), so we were very soon checked-in!

We were very impressed with the solid construction of the room, with heavy doors and drapes making the room almost sound-proof. This establishment is 100% smoke-free throughout with a charge of C$200 added to your bill if any whiff of the stuff is detected! The two rooms with Queen size beds were divided by French doors, with the furthest room (2nd photo) having an internet desk for use of their high-speed wireless connection system (I had my laptop with me). The main room had a large TV and DVD player as well as the kitchen fridge, microwave, sink, coffee-maker and dishes. The very nice bathroom had a special make-up mirror and a very good shower.

Continental breakfast came with the room and there is also a swimming pool and exercise room. Located next door is an A&W fast-food restaurant, a convenience store for basic grocery items and a gasoline-station. Only a couple of kilometres away is a large shopping area with major restaurants and stores, where we had our evening meal. Upon checking out in the morning, we were further surprised to be given our choice of a rose to take with us - it eventually adorned our suite in Ottawa for the remainder of our trip (3rd photo)!

Delta Centre Ville: A good location in downtown Montreal

In October, 2003 I attended an international conference in Montreal, sponsored by the Paris-based CIGRE organization (in English the 'International Committee on Large Electrical Systems'). Because they were using the conference facilities of the Delta Centre-Ville, that is where we stayed. I liked both the service and the location of the hotel - altogether a top-rate facility.

I have experienced quite a few different hotels in Montreal over the years and have found them all to be of quite a high standard. Unless you are really going cheap, you are likely to enjoy your time in the city!

The Delta is a 28-storey hotel with a circular restaurant on its top floor (we never made it that high) and we had a great view of the city from our 27th floor room. The room was very spacious and had a great king-sized bed.

We also took advantage of the underground parking at the hotel (US$13 per day). I also found that the restaurant on the main floor of the hotel was very good. As far as location is concerned, the Delta is only a few blocks away from the historic and picturesque Vieux Montreal area or you can strike out north for just a few blocks and you are into the underground-connected shopping maze in the modern core of the city. The room rate was US$100/night or $120 including taxes. The photo shows part of the roof-top restaurant peeking out to the left of the 'Delta' logo.

Auberge Place D'Armes: Fantastic Location

All of my previous trips to Quebec City had been due to either business meetings or just a one-night stop-over on the way home from Montreal or points further west. During this late-May, 2005 trip to the city, my wife's sister (Pauline) was visiting us from Cornwall, England. We had to come up with something a bit different for her visit, so we said let's spend a few days in Quebec City. No point in sparing the expense, or 'let's throw the cat another goldfish' as we would say in the Maritimes! We booked ourselves into a very nice Auberge (Inn) located in the heart of the walled-section of Quebec City.

This photo shows the pedestrian part of Ste Anne street running in front of Auberge Place D'Armes, with its small oval black sign. Adjoining it on the ground floor is a nice little restaurant, the Pain Beni, with part of its suspended red sign visible. We were located on the top floor overlooking both the street and the Chateau Frontenac hotel across the square.

Our bill, with taxes, came to C$350 (US$280) for three people for two nights. This included the extra person charge of C$20 per night.

Our room at Auberge Place D'Armes was very comfortable and well appointed. The main bed was great for a nice slumber (2nd photo) and, in European style, the TV was hung from the ceiling on a swivel arrangement to provide more useable space in the walking part of the room. To the right of the bed was a small washbasin and a full bath/shower with a dividing curtain from the remainder of the room.

The other end of the room (3rd photo) featured a real brick wall and contained a small couch which doubled as a pull-out bed. To the left on this photo, another very small room contained the toilet with a second washbasin and mirror. Our view out over the Place D'Armes toward the Chateau Frontenac was through two sets of windows to the right.

Since the Auberge is located on the pedestrian-only part of Ste. Anne street, we had no problems at all with noise. I imagine this would be a great spot during the summer months, with the sidewalk tables already set up on the street (but, this time, it was too cold and windy for anyone to use them) along with the stands of various artisans!

Auberge sur Mer (Inn on the Sea): Oceanfront setting

Located in Bassin on the southwest coast of the island of Havre Aubert, in the Iles de la Madeleine, this inn is a large old house with a great view of the nearby lighthouse off to its right (from this vantage point). The inn has nine well-decorated rooms and we were lucky enough to get one upstairs with a centre balcony overlooking the ocean. The lady who owns the inn has some trouble with her English, but between the two of us we had enough French and English to figure out what we were trying to say! This was the best accommodation we enjoyed on any of the islands during our week-long explorations of the archipelego.

It was fun sitting out on our 2nd floor balcony in the evening, sipping our wine as the ocean airs wafted by. As the light faded, we saw, in the distance, the cruise ferry "Vacancier" leaving for Montreal with its lights blazing. It reminded us of enjoying a similar view while in Cancun not too long before, watching the Cozumel cruise ships departing each night! This accommodation cost us C$161 including taxes (US$120) for one night with breakfast included.

The dining room (2nd photo) was very well decorated and had great window views over the Gulf. The breakfast we had in this spacious dining area was the best that we had during our trip. After serving yourself fresh orange juice, we had a fruit entree of blueberries, strawberries and cooked rhubarb around a scoop of sherbet. This was followed by the main course of French toast and strips of bacon as well as steaming hot coffee. The closer to the meal was a light merangue dish.

St. Ubaldé "La Maison Denis": Such confidence!!!

We had not booked this b+b, just turned up. Friends of the owner were washing down the deck and we were told " the owner is not here" but don't worry, come in, it's o.k. We were shown the rooms on a take your pick basis while 1 friend contacted the owner. Owner was in Montreal for the weekend, but no problem "it's 60 dollars, just leave the money on the table when you leave". We were speechless!!! We were also told everything for breakfast is in the fridge, Help yourselves. A great night's sleep, a good breakfast. Needless to say that when we left, the 60 dollars were left on the table, with a note of thanks, but we still haven't seen the owner!!!
