You have to see the Bascillica...
by dzni
You have to see the Bascillica du Notre Dame. It's in the 'Old Montreal' district (I think just slightly east of the very downtown... you'll know it when you start seeing narrower streets). We were pressed for time, so this is about the only thing we got to see in Montreal. The area looked like it had a whole bunch of neat shops and restaurants, though. Hmmm... fondest? Well, maybe I'm not fond of the memory, but it sure does stick out in my mind! Read above about getting lost in Montreal.
Mont Royal

Well you can't miss it when you are in Montreal, 'MONT ROYAL'... there is a mountain in the middle of the city... all green and big... (well for a guy from flat Holland)
If you want to do some hiking go up the montain and find the Chalet you have a great view if downtown Montreal, as you can see on the picture.
Go buy some maple candy if they are stoked again...hihihi I bought the whole bucket just before I went back home... was the first to do this... so that was fun... and they are really good believe me.

Have a look on the city from the Mont Royal. To go there : take the metro until Guy - Concordia then the bus (several lines). The park is very large and you have to climb by stairs to reach the belvedere.
Behind the belvedere, there is the Chalet, a nice 19° Century building.

French Helpful, Not Necessary
by lxine
Learning a bit of French is helpful for reading signs, but you'll find that downtown nearly everyone is bilingual. You may find yourself trying to practice your French but the salespeople will insist on practicing their English!
