Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The “Temara” sounded interesting from the description in the online booking site, which also advised of a special discount opening offer. There was a complete lack of any reviews to check the claims, but it appeared to be value. Sadly, it proved to be too good to be true! We were met by the owner’s wife, who (alarm bells should have rung) asked us to make a credit card payment up front. We’d booked for a room with “ensuite, cable and a balcony”, but when I subsequently went to the room, there was no ensuite; I’d have been nervous about stepping on the rickety balcony (at the rear); and the only furnishings were a bed and giant TV! Back I went down the stairs and told the woman that was not the room we’d booked. Then followed a marvellous discussion where she claimed that was the room, I insisted it wasn’t and asked repeatedly if they even had such a room as we’d booked! Next she said “very sorry, I don’t speak much English, I don’t understand”. My response (in moderately comprehensible French) “Madame, j’ai fait ce réservation depuis plusiers des mois. Avez vous ce chambre?” led to her suddenly rediscovering English and saying there was another room, but we’d have to pay more. After I refused to do that, she said she would call her husband to see what could be done. Eventually we were offered the cellar, which had a large bedroom (somewhat like a stone prison cell and with low plumbing - photos 2,3) but also a bathroom to ourselves. The unexpected “bonus” was that the cellar stayed cool during the warm weather. This was supposedly a “Bed and Breakfast”, but the latter consisted only of “make it yourself” toast and jam, plus equally DIY instant coffee, while the room was not serviced at all during our 3 night stay. With hindsight it’s amusing, but I’d suggest you avoid like the plague! Interestingly, when we recounted the tale to a very helpful lady at a tourist information counter, she said problems such as this are fairly common in Montréal!

I was booking my hotel only about a month in advance and Priceline wasn't yielding any hotels for what I was seeing as normal rates on Bidding for Travel so I chalked it up to the fact that the Jazz Festival for going on. At one point I added in the airport area because we were getting in so late at night, what I didn't do was check the regular rates, I ended up only saving $9US. In any event, I got the Holiday Inn at the airport for $80 per night plus $20 in taxes. As with most airport hotels, the Holiday Inn is not convenient to downtown Montreal so I suspect that most of their customers are airline personnel, business people and travelers with early or late flights. I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to claim the GST refund since Priceline doesn't itemize taxes but I submitted it and it was refunded based on my calculation.
When we arrived 2 hours after we were supposed to, the place where we rented the car from was already closed so I remembered that the Holiday Inn had a free shuttle, we called from inside the airport because it was so late, I assume they run regularly but you might want to check this out. You can catch the shuttle just outside arrivals, look for the numbered signs with the hotel listed on it. They were nice enough to deliver us to the off site car rental location the next morning. The room was a standard business type room with a king sized bed, an in room safe, TV, air conditioning. The bathroom had minimal toiletries, plenty of hot water, decent towels and a hair dryer. We didn't have a chance to use the pool but it looked nice and it was in the interior courtyard so it was covered in case of weather. Check in was quick and friendly, no mention of Priceline and no need to even leave a credit card imprint. Leave a Comment

Unsuccesful at booking with Priceline, I turned to the guidebooks and found this small hotel located in the Quartier Latin on St. Denis. I absolutely loved the location, the surrounding area is chock full of restaurants in all price ranges and shops, including a condom store right across the street from the hotel (someone needs to explain to me why the only place I've ever seen a store devoted exclusively to condoms is in Canada, both in Toronto and Montreal!). The Latin Quarter is close to the University so there seemed to be young people walking around all the time and many of the businesses seem to cater to this age group.
I reserved one of the budget rooms as we spend very little time in our room, a little small but perfectly adequate for our needs. The shower was fine, plenty of hot water, TV, phone, air conditioner. A basic buffet breakfast is included in the rate, a shame really as I would have rather gone and found a patisserie or tried those bagels that Montreal claims are better than New York's. The first day we skipped it since we had a couple of spare Tim Horton donuts left over, we should have skipped it the 2nd day too, I never did get to try those bagels. The hotel has a couple of parking spots but they were first come first serve so we parked about 1 1/2 blocks away at the Library parking lot which was 10CAD per day. To check in, there is a 15 minute parking space right in front of the hotel so you can unload your luggage. Leave a Comment

I would recommend this to anyone who appreciates great decor and ambiance! Located in the Latin Quarter, this place was close to everything... bars, shops, metro.. It's a very pretty B&B though some parts of the decor looked like something out of a horror flick.. see pics! At $90 cdn per night (kick ass breakfast included), you can't go wrong. I'm not sure whether it's more or less than the norm in Montreal but I thought it was worth every penny.
Denis (the host) was extremely friendly and accomidating! And he had the cutest accent. Oh, beware of the stairs if you've had a few pints!! =) Leave a Comment Theme: Bed and BreakfastPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: 311 Ontario estPhone: 1-877-845-7932Directions: Latin QuarterWebsite: www.heritagevictorien.com Other Contact: info@heritagevictorien.com

This is perhaps the most tastefully decorated, friendly, and warm place I've ever stayed! The rooms are simple yet stunningly beautiful; old-town rock and brick walls, fine spotless wood floors, fantastic paintings and prints, large rustic wooden shutters, and a fireplace. This feels like the home you always wished you had; the word "cozy" doesn't even begin to cover it. By the end of our stay we really didn't want to move out. We were greeted at the door by Mikael and the Auberge's friendly little dog, "Elliot". The funny, tiny dog will move from one person to another, quietly waiting for a pat on the head, until he's satisfied everyone's said "Hello." Over the next three days Mikael took fantastic care of us; he suggested restaurants, asked how our trip was going, cracked jokes, and made entirely sure our stay was a pleasant one. We really looked forward to seeing both him and Elliot on our way in and out. Breakfast is included in your stay, served in a gorgeous tranquil breakfast room with two long tables and an overhead skylight. The food was plentiful and made to order. You get choice of 4 juices, coffee, toast, fruit salad, croissants, pastries, an omelette or French toast. On our returns to the Auberge in the evenings, we found our room had been perfectly cleaned and our things tidied up and properly arranged. Brand new bars of soap appeared in the bathroom. The location of this inn couldn't be better. It's right in the heart of Old Montreal, on the main street, within minutes walking distance to Place Jaques Cartier but far enough away so that it's not too noisy at night. Although the Sans Soucy is expensive compared to other regular Montreal hotels, you will find that it's perhaps the least expensive of it's kind in "Vieux-Montreal". And worth every penny! I have never been treated so well!
A complete no-smoking environment. Rooms with faux-fireplaces and spa bathtubs. Free Internet wi-fi. A friendly little dog named "Elliot." On another trip to through Montreal I stayed at the Holiday Inn on Sherbrooke street. I have to say this was a very nice hotel and at $140 CDN or so a night was one of the cheaper ones downtown but I had a great room on the corner with great views of the city. It was busy there with a nice restaurant.
What is important about this hotel though is it is just one street up from St. Catherine's street so you are right dowtown and it makes for a great location to explore Montreal. There is also an indoor pool, whirlpool, sauna, restaurant & bar, massage service, same-day dry cleaning, boutique, indoor valet parking, exercise room and beauty salon. I stayed in room at the top of this hotel. There are only 13 rooms in total here, and it feels as if you're staying in a house. The room was quite charming, with brightly coloured bedding and walls. There was even a little balcony leading outside. The hotel room that I stayed in didn't have a bathroom inside the suite, but there was a shared bathroom just outside the door off the hallway. I stayed here during my first and very brief visit to Montreal. I more or less used it as a home base to which I explored Montreal. Since my second visit I've acquainted myself with Montreal's neighbourhoods and have oriented myself quite well, but at the time I first visited, I had no sense of direction or how far or close the nearby attractions were. I now know that the Hotel Le Breton's a very close walk to the trendy rue St-Denis where you'll find some great shops and restaurants. It's also a relatively close distance to Chinatown and Vieux Montreal.
