Candlewood Suites

by Vilmad

We will be visiting Montreal in August and staying at the Candlewood Suite Montreal Downtown Hotel. The hotel informs me that the nearest metro is Saint Laurent and perhaps Champs de Mar. However, on looking up directions on Google, it says to be careful as it the path is lacking pedestrian walkways etc. How far is the closest metro in terms of walking minutes? Thanks.

Saint Laurent Metro is about 5 minutes walk above ground from the hotel and you can also easily access Place des Arts and Place D'Armes Metro using the RESO. I don't know why Google should reckon there are no pedestrian walkways unless they mean that you have to cross the busy main road and there are no nearby traffic lights (which there are on the crossroads of Rene Levesque and St Laurent).

Hope this helps.

Enjoy Montreal.

I stayed there last week and can tell you that you can get to either station by crossing the street (e.g.Boul. René-Lévesque for Champ de Mars) at an appropriate pedestrian crosswalk. In any event, especially in August, you are within walking distance of many attractions (Old Montreal, Old Port, St Laurent, St Denis, Ste Catherine etc.).

Travel Tips for Montreal

Montreal Tip

by aquatic

I liked Montreal for contrasts in architecture. For example, these buildings were designed by one of the competitors of architectural contest. These are apartments of the future - highest priority for privacy. None of the windows are facing each other.

Visit the old town / harbour front. It's an awesome recreational area, with plent of space to ride your bicycle and roller blade, or just lay down on the grass and enjoy. Take it easy, though, because there are a lot of people here during the summer, and there are plenty of things going on. Especially during the 'Just for laughs' festival.

The Ice Storm!!!! Talk to anybody in Montréal about the Ice Storm and they'll have an anecdote to tell. I personally had a ball. I camped out at a couple of my friends' places and volunteered with the police and at a shelter.

I didnt that tiping was compilsary in Canada as it isnt in Europe. On a couple of occasions i ve been asked by the person at the bar to give a tip. I found the whole thing really embarassing as it made me feel like if i was mean.

In Europe we do tip waiters when they bring food/drinks/whatever at out table but not when we buy our drink at the bar. Anyway that was worth mentioning to avoid you the same embarassment.

Montreal is generally French-speaking, but they don't insist that tourists do. Sometimes we tried to speak some French, but the locals quickly learned that we were probably 'stupid Americans who don't speak any foreign language', and switched to English. They speak very good English there.
