Vieux Montreal - the old city
by yooperprof
A Clean City! It's truly impressive how impressive Vieux Montreal (the old city). The fact that many of the streets are pedestrianized helps a lot - it keeps down both air and noise pollution. In fact, I think that Montreal is noticeably cleaner than most comparable European cities.
The first two pictures are from my 1996 visit to the city, while the photos of the old warehouses along the quai are from 2008.
Victorian buildings
by tiabunna
Our B&B was in an area known as the Latin Quarter, apparently known for its interesting houses and for being the traditional centre of French nationalism. So, with those thoughts, I rather expected to find buildings in the French style.
I wouldn’t say that the outcome disappointed me, but the buildings we found were generally what seems to be called “Victorian” (though Australia, also with a British background in that period, does not have buildings in this style). The photos illustrate what seemed to be some reasonably typical examples of the style: multi storeyed with attics, elevated staircases, fairly ornate trim. They were colourful and interesting and yes, the area does warrant visiting if you have any interest in architecture – though the buildings seemed to me to be entirely a “North American’ style!
Les TAM TAM du Mont-Royal....
by superlolo
Les TAM TAM du Mont-Royal. During the summer, each Sunday, a huge amount of persons gatter at the bottom of Mount-Royal. A lot of persons are there and play the drums, so you can enjoy their music. You can just sit there and enjoy the sun, or there are a bunch of artisans (does that word exist?!?) who are sell there works (necklaces, rings, etc.) It is kind of a hippie gattering, a lot of persons a there to smoke a good joint, but no one will look at you in a weird way, whatever your type is! You MUST try to go at the TAM TAM on a Sunday. It's unique to Montreal and it is a great time. You also will have a chance to meet all sort of people!
Jaywalking: when in Rome...
by Telse
It seems like travellers don't really need to wait at a crosswalk to cross the street--plenty of Montrealers jaywalk. In fact, I saw more jaywalking in one week than in the 20 years I've been alive. People cross at crosswalks at red lights, dart across the road when they feel like it, and sometimes even if cars are approaching. Make sure you have travel insurance when copying the locals on this custom...
Smoked meat
by richiecdisc
There may be arguments in Montreal as to who has the best smoked meat in town but every fine citizen agrees that their smoked meat is the best in the world and turn their noses up to New York City's pastrami as inferior. I like both and Schwarz's is an atmospheric old restaurant to sample one of Montrea's culinary delicacies.
